Brooklyn Heights Cinema and Knish Fundraiser on News 12

News 12 did a feature from the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, where they interviewed me about “If These Knishes Could Talk”, and a few lucky matinee customers about the New York accent. They also put in a plug for the upcoming Knish/New York accent film fundraiser. (Glad my mascara held, it was quite a windy day.) Hope you like the segment and hope to see you all there February 9th! With news of the possible closing of the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, it’ll be good to rally the troops and show the theater some love. Video after the jump. Continue Reading →

Guest Post: Brooklyn Heights Cinema Owner Kenn Lowy Responds to Possible Closing

Guest Post: Brooklyn Heights Cinema Owner Kenn Lowy Responds to Possible Closing

Brooklyn Heights Cinema owner Kenn Lowy has written this guest post in response to the news that the building may be demolished to make way for a 5-story residence.

“So the news is out: the Brooklyn Heights Cinema building is going to be demolished and a 5 story condo will take its place. A lot of people have asked me if I knew this could happen? The answer is yes. When I met with the landlord last year he told me there was a good chance he would develop it. So I had a choice, let it close or move forward and take my chances. Actually, there wasn’t a choice for me because this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. If I succeeded at making it better and growing the business, then I knew I could continue it elsewhere if it came to that. I wanted to make it more of a destination adding music, comedy (coming in February) and silent films with live music and you (my neighbors) have been very supportive.”

Bloomie, Marty Attend Shake Shack Opening in Downtown Brooklyn [Video]

Bloomie, Marty Attend Shake Shack Opening in Downtown Brooklyn [Video]

Shake Shack [409 Fulton Street] has arrived and not a moment too soon for this writer. Before locating on Fulton and Adams, I had to trek to Battery Park City to get my Double Burger with French Fries (100% free of artificial trans-fats and made from Yukon Gold potatoes, 25% less fat than average fries) and chocolate Hand-Spun shake eaten with a spoon. Yes, these shakes are thick enough to be eaten with a spoon and every spoonful is delectable. Shake Shake doesn’t come cheap though. A burger, fries and shake will cost close to $20 but it is worth every penny.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Mayor Mike Bloomberg and others were on hand for today’s opening. Video after the jump. Continue Reading →

Reminder: Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation Meeting Monday at Noon (12/5)

Reminder: Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation Meeting Monday at Noon (12/5)

No word yet on whether the 7 hotel/housing schemes proposed for Brooklyn Bridge Park with be on the BBPC’s meeting Monday (12/5) afternoon but it would be totally bananas if it wasn’t on the agenda.

The meeting is open to the public and while they may or may not be taking questions, if you’re a fan/not a fan of those proposals or other issues regarding the park it’s a good idea to show up.

The meeting will be held at “approximately” 12:00 PM, at the Corporation’s offices at 334 Furman Street (at Joralemon Street).

Read more about the hotel/housing proposals here.

Here’s the “anticipated” agenda in PDF form. (Thanks Matt Parker for the link)

Karl and his Cam are Back

Karl and his Cam are Back

imdb

Mr. J. returns with video from some weekend events and locales: the Danish Christmas Fair; the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange, where he watched potter Drew Montgomery at work; the perhaps suddenly chic Cranberry’s; the now-padlocked Tobacco Warehouse; Brooklyn Bridge Park and Jane’s Carousel. He finishes with an extended, annotated clip from Sweet November, a 1968 movie (not to be confused with a more recent one with the same title) starring Sandy Dennis and Anthony Newley (photo) and featuring some vintage Brooklyn Heights scenes. Did Spector’s pharmacy once occupy the space now taken by City Chemist, as the opening scene suggests? Video after the jump. Continue Reading →
