Our faithful videographer & correspondent Karl Junkersfeld was on the scene on the Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO border as a piece of the roof cornice at 7 Old Fulton Street—which houses a restaurant by the same name and has apartments above—collapsed onto the street, at 12:45 Monday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was injured. Karl notes that a similar incident recently took place at Grimaldi’s Pizza up the street. See his 1:21-minute report below. Continue Reading →

Karl Grooves on Booker T. Jones
Our Mr. J. and his cam were on hand at Pier 1 yesterday evening for the opening event in the Dance Party series co-sponsored by BRIC Arts Media and Brooklyn Bridge Park. As you can see, Karl got right into the funk groove. Don’t forget, next Thursday it’s Brazilian. Video after the jump. Continue Reading →
Saturday’s Spring Egg Hunt A Smash Success!
The Spring Egg Hunt on Saturday drew a crowd of parents and kids that started lining up to the entrance of the Pierrepont Playground by 9:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. event. Within 15 minutes, the line extended past 2 Montague Terrace all the way to Remsen Street. See Karl Junkersfeld’s action-packed video after the jump! Continue Reading →

Mr. J. Goes Mexican At Gran Electrica
The intrepid Karl and his cam trek southward, both geographically and gustatorially, to try the fare at Gran Electrica, the new Mexican restaurant at Five Front Street, just below Old Fulton, recently opened by the owners of Colonie. His verdict on the spareribs? Delicioso. The climb back up Squibb Hill may have helped to burn off some of the calories. Video after the jump.
VW Bugged: Tree Falls on Columbia Heights
Looks like this tree branch went after the VW rather than wait for a bug to come to it. At around 1:30 p.m. on Columbia Heights near Clark Street, a tree branch crashed on the hood of this vintage Volkswagen Bug. The good news is that there doesn’t appear to be much, if any, damage. They just don’t make cars like that anymore.
Our intrepid correspondent Karl Junkersfeld shot video as well, which you can view by clicking on Continue Reading →
Karl and Claude’s Excellent Culinary Adventure at Dine in Brooklyn Presser
Yesterday, Borough President Marty Markowitz hosted a Dine in Brooklyn (details on this forthcoming event are in Chuck Taylor’s post) preview tasting for the press at Borough Hall, and Karl, his cam, and your correspondent were there. Results: some taste thrills, two full tummies (yes, Karl did his share of eating, too), and a splattered shirt. Video after the jump. Continue Reading →
Michael Randazzo, Ubiquitous Brooklyn Heights Resident, Interviewed on Channel 2 News
Some readers spotted the Channel 2 News crew on the Promenade Thursday, interviewing passers-by about the unseasonably balmy weather. One of those was Heights resident Michael Randazzo, who was out walking his dog Enzo. Karl Junkersfeld has made a video that incorporates Michael’s moment on citywide news, as well as footage of him in other settings. Video after the jump. Continue Reading →
Truck Downs Mature Elm At Montague & Henry Streets
A beautiful, mature elm tree was downed this morning in front of Andy’s Chinese at 128 Montague Street, when an oversized truck attempted to make a left turn from Montague Street onto Henry. Local fire department crews responded and removed much of the debris by noon, with police tape wrapped around the trunk and remaining brush.
See Karl Junkersfeld’s fantastic on-the-scene coverage in this 2-minute video here (also embedded below the jump), which revisits other trees that Brooklyn Heights has lost, in addition to footage immediately after today’s cataclysm. Continue Reading →
Mr. J. Loves Baluchi’s
In anticipation of the Indian chain Baluchi’s opening today in the former Seasons spot on Henry between Cranberry and Middagh, Karl took his cam to the store on Warren Street in lower Manhattan. Was it DEE-licious? Give it a look. Continue Reading →
Brooklyn Heights Cinema and Knish Fundraiser on News 12
News 12 did a feature from the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, where they interviewed me about “If These Knishes Could Talk”, and a few lucky matinee customers about the New York accent. They also put in a plug for the upcoming Knish/New York accent film fundraiser. (Glad my mascara held, it was quite a windy day.) Hope you like the segment and hope to see you all there February 9th! With news of the possible closing of the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, it’ll be good to rally the troops and show the theater some love. Video after the jump. Continue Reading →
Guest Post: Brooklyn Heights Cinema Owner Kenn Lowy Responds to Possible Closing
Brooklyn Heights Cinema owner Kenn Lowy has written this guest post in response to the news that the building may be demolished to make way for a 5-story residence.
“So the news is out: the Brooklyn Heights Cinema building is going to be demolished and a 5 story condo will take its place. A lot of people have asked me if I knew this could happen? The answer is yes. When I met with the landlord last year he told me there was a good chance he would develop it. So I had a choice, let it close or move forward and take my chances. Actually, there wasn’t a choice for me because this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. If I succeeded at making it better and growing the business, then I knew I could continue it elsewhere if it came to that. I wanted to make it more of a destination adding music, comedy (coming in February) and silent films with live music and you (my neighbors) have been very supportive.”
