Is Bread and Butter Toast?

Sources tell BHB that Henry Street eatery Bread and Butter (nee Le Petit Marche) has served its last dish of “American comfort food”. One report has the operators of Picket Fence in Ditmas Park taking over the operation.

Bread and Butter [46 Henry Street] debuted in January 2010, flipping its name and menu to American comfort food in an apparent effort to capitalize on the Brooklyn trend popularized by Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens. Its former incarnation, Le Petit Marche, had struggled since opening in December 2006.

In December 2009, Le Petit Marche ran into issues with the Department of Health which its owners blamed on “clerical errors”.

New York Times Pans Bread and Butter

So much for Bread & Butter being the Phoenix rising from the ashes of its former incarnation Le Petit Marche.   Already facing an uphill battle after last year’s missteps regarding several DOH violations and what appeared to be a cover-up, Bread and Butter needed to come strong to the hoop to regain neighborhood loyalty. While commenters on BHB have had mostly positive things to say about the “new” eatery, today’s New York Times review by Sam Sifton doesn’t help the cause: Continue Reading →

Le Petit Marche Will Re-open as Bread and Butter

With the end of 2009 also came the end of Le Petit Marche. The three-year-old French restaurant shuttered on New Year’s Eve, and the owners said the space will re-open under new management as early as this weekend.

The new restaurant will be called Bread and Butter, and specialize in American comfort. Dishes will include southern fried chicken, lobster rolls and three different types of macaroni and cheese.

Rob Weiner, who served as chef when Le Petit Marche opened, will return to be chef and co-owner for the new venture, along with co-owner Daniella Silone.

“Le Petit Marche has lived its life,” Weiner said. “I’m totally psyched and hope to recreate the magic.” Continue Reading →

Le Petit Marche Closed, Papered Up

AEB, among other commenters, reports:

Homer, just passed by Le Petit Marche and it appears to have closed. Windows covered on the inside with taped brown paper.

Another commenter, Jonesy suggests:

From the rumor mill – Le Petit Marche isn’t closing. They are going to change their name, remodel, and bring back their old chef. I can see wanting to change their name after the whole DOH thing.

Le Petit Marche Back In Business

p1010131_edited-1_1024

After passing their re-inspection today “with flying colors,” Le Petit Marche will be re-opened for business beginning tonight, owner Daniella Silone told BHB.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking,” she said. “I’m happy to be re-opened.”

Silone said she didn’t know how the restaurant will be received, but she “hopes people will give us a chance.” Continue Reading →

Will You Go Back to Le Petit Marche?

Le Petit Marche’s [46 Henry Street] recent trouble with the NYC Department of Health and the establishment’s attempt to spin its violations as the product of “clerical errors” has us wondering if Brooklyn Heights residents are willing to return to dining there should they pass re-re-inspection. Owner Daniella Silone told BHB that the situation is “breaking her heart” and she hopes that neighborhood residents will not “forsake” her and the establishment for this chain of events. On Silone’s and LPM’s side is the fact that they’ve created a beautiful space, helped to revitalize the North Heights dining scene and most of all made a previously hideous facade into something worthy of our historic neighborhood. Not only was Le Petit Marche’s re-opening for a private party this weekend not permitted, the restaurant failed a re-inspeciton today, according to officials at the Department of Health.

During today’s re-inspection, officials found mice droppings as well as conditions for mice “harborage.” In order to re-open the restaurant must pass another re-inspection.

While the restaurant claimed over the weekend the shut down was a result of a clerical error, the DOH stood firm and said the restaurant had failed three inspections since August.

Repeated calls to Le Petit Marche have gone unreturned. Full DOH statement after the jump. Continue Reading →

Closed-Open-Closed: Is Le Petit Marche Brooklyn Heights’ Brigadoon?

We reported, in an update to a Saturday post, that Le Petit Marche had reopened, and that the DOH closure notices on the window and door had been removed or covered by colorful holiday posters. Below is a photo taken by your correspondent at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday:

Although not visible in the photo, people were inside, drinking and conversing, at what appeared to be a private party. This morning, by contrast, the decorative signs on the window and door were gone, and, as shown in the photo below taken at about 8:45 a.m., the DOH closure signs were once again visible.

Le Petit Marche to Re-open Tomorrow?

Your correspondent has learned from a friend, who had made a reservation for Thanksgiving dinner at Le Petit Marche, that she has received a phone call from one of the owners of the restaurant, assuring her that the closure was indeed the result of a clerical error, claiming that it has now been rectified, and that LPM will be back in business tomorrow. We have a phone call in to the restaurant asking for confirmation.

Update: LPM has re-opened. Your correspondent went for a look-see at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and found the DOH sign and the owners’ explanatory one both gone, replaced or obscured by colorful “Autumn Greetings” posters. Inside, well dressed people were enjoying drinks.

Le Petit Marche Blames Clerical Errors and Red Tape for Department of Health Shutdown

The management of Le Petit Marche claims that it was shutdown by the NYC Department of Health not over violations but rather issues related to a “clerical error” and bureaucratic ”red tape”.  A notice has been posted at the eatery by the owners stating:

Thank You Dear Valued Customers

We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience. Due to a clerical error we were unable to get the proper permits from the New York City Department of Health forcing us to temporarily close our doors.  Thank you for your patience and understanding while we deal with the red tape and bureaucracy of our great city while the permits are being issued.

Yesterday, the DOH told BHB that the establishment was on its third strike of unresolved violations adding that “in order to reopen, the operator of Le Petit Marche must correct all conditions that led to violations, submit an affidavit of correction to the Health Department and schedule a re-opening inspection.”

We know that many restaurateurs and food service professionals read BHB – what’s your take on this latest development?  Is it possible that LPM’s claim of being caught up in a government muck up is plausible?

While the most recent inspection on the site was last week’s 23 violation points, the DOH still shut down the restaurant until the it files to have a re-inspection. DOH statement after the jump. A BHB tipster writes in:

Nothing yet on the yellow Health Department signs adorning Le Petit Marche?

Matthew Parker comments:

Earlier this morning I walked by Le Petite Marche on Henry St. There are two Board of Health signs on the front windows ordering the restaurant closed.

I saw workers inside cleaning up.

NYC  Department of Health public records show that the restaurant racked up 23 violation points on November 11.   Continue Reading →
