While there’s hardly a similar open space in Brooklyn Heights, the DUMBO Improvement District is proposing an intriguing option: to close off traffic along Anchorage Place—which serves as the north entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park—and turn it into a pedestrian plaza. A hearing on the plan was held Wednesday eve to air both sides of […]

Is The Heights Flanked By Brooklyn’s Burgeoning ‘Tech Triangle’?
Is it wishful thinking or a truly sustainable business plan? A coalition that calls itself The Brooklyn Tech Triangle believes that the borough has a burgeoning technology sector, surrounding Brooklyn Heights within Downtown Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Navy Yard and DUMBO, where it claims technology tenants have proliferated into a mini Silicon Valley. The group is […]
First Look At Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Hotel/Rez Complex
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corp. is expected to vote Tuesday June 19 on which developer will be awarded the contract to build the controversial BBP hotel and residential complex next to Pier 1 near DUMBO, as mandated by NYC Mayor Bloomberg to fund the future of the park. Curbed refers to reports in The New […]
Witnesses Peddling Three Undeveloped Parcels In DUMBO
It appears that Johovah’s Witnesses don’t just own established properties within the boundaries of Brooklyn Heights. Crain’s and The Real Deal report that the religious group has commissioned Cushman & Wakefield to sniff out a buyer for three adjacent undeveloped lots in nearby DUMBO. The parcels, at 173 and 177 Front Street—both vacant—and 200 Water […]
New York Times Gives Mexican Gran Electrica A Taste Test
Gran Electrica, the Mexican restaurant that opened in March at Five Front Street on the DUMBO border, gets the full treatment in a New York Times review. Mind you, our own BHB Karl Junkersfeld has already weighed in. His verdict: “Delicioso.” The Times’ Robin Finn remarks that the restaurant “is a brick-walled, votive-lighted, tin-ceilinged amalgam […]
Roof Cornice Breaks Off At 7 Old Fulton Street
Our faithful videographer & correspondent Karl Junkersfeld was on the scene on the Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO border as a piece of the roof cornice at 7 Old Fulton Street—which houses a restaurant by the same name and has apartments above—collapsed onto the street, at 12:45 Monday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was injured. Karl notes that a […]
Say ‘How Do’ To Your New DUMBO Neighbor: Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway seems to have a penchant for Brooklyn. The Oscar-nominated doe-eyed actress—who is starring next as Catwoman in this summer’s “The Dark Knight Rises”—has just moved from her BK Prospect Heights home to… DUMBO. Both Curbed and Gothamist are reporting a goodie bag of details: She and fiancé Adam Shulman have moved into a […]
Jane’s Carousel Earns Kudos From Travel & Leisure’s Design Awards
The March 2012 issue of “Travel and Leisure” magazine, which features its 2012 Design Awards, includes Brooklyn’s own Jane’s Carousel Pavilion, winning kudos for Best Public Space. The wondrously recreated carousel in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn Bridge Park was designed and meticulously restored by Jane Walentas
Brooklyn Heights in the Path of Hurricane Irene
It’s still three days away, and the path it follows changes continually, but the current (Thursday afternoon) “center” track of Hurricane Irene is now projected to pass through Brooklyn and Manhattan, and the eye could potentially go right over the Brooklyn Heights Area.
Finally! A Cafe with Wi-Fi!
These days, cafes with free internet access in the Brooklyn Heights area are hard to find. Iris stopped offering it, and Tazza still doesn’t. Well web-browsing latte drinkers, you’re in luck. Archway Cafe at the Pearl Street Triangle posted signage claiming to offer food, coffee, AND Wi-Fi!
