Ozu now as a fully stocked bar, complete with wine, beer, cocktails, and sake. The staff noted that the main reason they wanted to obtain the license was to serve sake, a frequently requested Japanese rice-based alcohol.

One Day Shopping Event, Just in Time for Holidays

Looking for some unique holiday gifts for your friends and family this season? Maybe the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue can help. On Sunday, November 21st, from 11am to 5pm, the synagogue will transform into a holiday gift market filled with lots of local merchants. In fact– over 20 local vendors will be selling their goods– including Heights Kids, Tiki Girl Shop, Cobblestone Foods, Liddabit Sweets, and Brooklyn Brew.

“This is the first year we are featuring such an extensive, well-rounded Market, with merchandise from around the City and around the world,” said BHS Gift Shop curator Andrea Perlman. “In the past we had a small-scale fair with a limited selection of crafts and books. This year, we have gifts that everyone in the neighborhood will want to buy for Chanukah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. We’ll have items at a variety of price points and there will be local, artisanal food items for sale, on-site eats from Cobblestone Foods, and the Brooklyn Wine Exchange will do a wine tasting.”

Mark your calendars, the event is for one day only! For more information and a full list of vendors, visit http://www.bhsbrooklyn.org/.

Spend Halloween with the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra

The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra (BSO), a 65-person music ensemble, will be performing their first show of the season on Sunday October 31st at 3pm. The Halloween performance is the first of five, stretching all the way to June. All shows take place at St. Ann’s Church on the corner of Montague and Clinton Streets. The orchestra asks for a $15 donation, but it is not required.

Going into his 14th season as a conductor with BSO, Nicholas Armstrong claims conducting is the “best thing he does.” He’s also a violist and the Artistic Director at Poly Prep County Day School, but loves spending time with the group.

“After being exhausted all week at work. We come together and make beautiful music.” Armstrong said.  Each week, the orchestra comes together to practice on Monday nights from 7:30 to 10pm, playing a selection of classical, romantic 20th century pieces. While most of the music is instrumental, Armstrong said he will include singers in some of their performances.

The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra was started in Brooklyn Heights, this being the 37th year at St. Ann’s Church. “It’s not only the home of the orchestra,” Armstrong said. “it’s also the only place in the area that can fit us!”

Interested in becoming a part of the group? BSO  is always looking for new players– especially string instruments. After sitting in on a couple practices, prospective members can go through an audition process. Visit http://www.brooklynsymphonyorchestra.org/index.html for more information and the orchestra’s upcoming schedule.

Clark Street Sushi: How do you decide?

We’re lucky over here in Brooklyn Heights– we have a vast selection of sushi restaurants anytime we’re craving a giant dragon roll. With three sushi restaurants on Clark Street alone, how do we decide where to go? Ambiance? Price? BYOB? Let’s take a look at the break down:

1. Iron Chef House, 92 Clark Street

Atmosphere: Small and cozy, exposed brick, and unique ceramics, but fills up fast

Price: Miso Soup – $1.75, Spicy Tuna Roll – $4.50, Lunch Special (two rolls, soup AND salad) – $7.50

BYOB:  No, but they have a full bar.

2. OZU Japanese Cuisine and Lounge, 78 Clark Street

Atmosphere: Spacious, modern, and lots of seating, but with neon lights and a TV in the corner

Price: Miso Soup – $2.00, Spicy Tuna Roll – $5.00, Lunch Special (2 Rolls, soup OR salad, $8)

BYOB: YES

3. Sushi Gallery, 71 Clark Street

Atmosphere: In Clark Street subway station, good for quick lunch grab, bad for ambiance

Price: Miso Soup – $2.50, Spicy Tuna Roll – $4.50, Lunch Special (sushi box with four pieces, soup AND salad) – $9.95

BYOB: No, but they supply beer and wine.

Tell us Brooklyn Heights-ers, do you go for the cheapest soup? Are you there solely for the BYOB? What’s your sushi pick?
