Montague BID’s Summer Space: “Come for the Dog Show, Stay for the Opera”

The Summer Space pedestrian plaza series concludes this Sunday September 19th, with a final day of fun and games on Montague Street. From 11am to 6pm, the two blocks between Clinton and Hicks will once again be closed off to cars. So what’s in store? The Brooklyn Heights Association will host it’s first-ever dog show at 1pm– right in front of Pets Emporium at 105 Montague Street. Your pup can compete in two of 12 different categories, including “Best Vocal Performance,” “Best Hairdo” and “Least Obedient.”

Before and after the dog show, attendees can experience a little high culture with the sounds of the Grace & Spiritus Chorale at 12:30. Then at 3pm, the Martha Cardona Theater performs arias, duets, musical theater, Yiddish folk music and highlights from Don Pasquale!

Other features include a free Zumba class, chess matches, Yoga demonstrations, and free makeovers from Ricky’s NYC, City Chemist, and M.A.C. Cosmetics. It’s now or next year!

Outdoor Art Installation Coming to Dumbo

A dozen video artists from around the world will come together to collectively show their work as “The Endless Bridge” at the Dumbo Arts Festival September 24th to 26th. But this video art won’t be displayed on a traditional TV or projector screen, the work will actually be projected onto both sides of the Manhattan Bridge Anchorage in Dumbo, as well as other nearby sights, from 8:30pm to midnight on all three nights of the festival.

“The concept of ‘The Endless Bridge’ is an exploration of ‘transition,’ as a constant,” said curator Leo Kuelbs.“In the past several years, the rate of change: technological, climate-wise-down to our social and personal lives, has continued to increase multi-fold.  Transition is no longer a space between, it is the constant.”

So where exactly is the display? Video will appear on the North and South sides of the Manhattan Bridge Anchorage (Front at Adams and Frontat Pearl), a parking lot wall (Jay and Water) and the shop windows at West Elm (Front and Main).

Visit http://dumboartsfestival.com/ for more infromation on this collection and a complete list of exhibits.

Refresh with Water-on-the-Go

If you haven’t had enough water with all of the rain over the past few days, head down to Washington Street at the corner of Prospect Street today for a little refresher. The New York Department of Environmental Protection has set up water bottle refill stations all over the city, including right here in our neighborhood, for their “Water-on-the-Go” program.

The New York DEP says, “Get your fill of New York City’s great-tasting, award-winning tap water all summer long! DEP is partnering with City agencies and other local organizations to help New Yorkers stay hydrated and healthy this summer by setting up NYC Water-On-the-Go fountains at public plazas, greenmarkets and parks from July Fourth until Labor Day.”

With less than two weeks left until Labor Day, you only have two chances left (after today) to get a taste from Water-on-the-Go in Brooklyn Heights. NYC Water will be at the Borough Hall Green Market on August 31st, and at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 on September 5th.

Grand Opening Party at The Heights Salon

dscn0020Last night, the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood was invited to celebrate the Grand Opening of The Heights Salon at 136 Montague Street. Armed with wine, cake, and gift bags for all attendees, owners Rafael Nieves and Alfred Tom enthusiastically showed off their beautiful salon space. The salon offers a variety of services to their clients, including haircuts, color correction, Keratin conditioning treatments, and Japanese Hair Straightening, as well as manicures, pedicures, and waxing. One thing the stylists don’t give? Suggestions.

“I never give advice, I listen to my clients,” stylist Mario said. “I talk to them before I do their hair. I ask about their job, what they like to do, even the perfume they wear. Details are important.” Mario, who used to work at Studio Fryzura on Clark Street, strives to offer each customer a personal experience, right down to the salon decor. “We wanted the space to feel homey, comfortable, and cozy,” he said.

GOOD NEWS! The Heights Salon is offering a 10% discount during the month of August to anyone who mentions that they read about them on the Brooklyn Heights Blog! Visit The Heights Salon Tuesday through Friday 10am to 7pm, Saturday 10am to 6pm, or Sunday 10am to 5pm, and call 347-763-1023 to schedule your appointment.
