New York Times Gives Mexican Gran Electrica A Taste Test

Gran Electrica, the Mexican restaurant that opened in March at Five Front Street on the DUMBO border, gets the full treatment in a New York Times review. Mind you, our own BHB Karl Junkersfeld has already weighed in. His verdict: “Delicioso.”

The Times’ Robin Finn remarks that the restaurant “is a brick-walled, votive-lighted, tin-ceilinged amalgam of the sustainably local and the whimsically loco. The mescal beverage options promise to knock your Birkenstocks off, as does the back garden, where the Brooklyn Bridge curves overhead like a distant awning.”

Ate there yesterday with hubby! We sat outside in their garden. It was lovely but serves a limited menu, only tacos. Everything was homemade including the tortillas… apparently there are two little mexican ladies in the back making them by hand. I had the carnitas (yum!) hubby had the tongue (eek) but he loved it! Guac was so-so, mine is better! Portions are small but authentic… and it’s a bit pricey for what you get. But if you’re looking for an alternative to Pacifico, GE is great. Looking forward to trying their full menu soon.

Food is delicious, best tongue tacos I’ve ever had! But $17 for a pour of Heradura Reposado is taking the mickey. Nice friendly staff.

Leave the mole, take the tacos.

I trust Yelp. The Times review was completely useless – no comment at all about the quality of the food. Why should I care that they discussed the baby at the airport? I want to know how everything tasted!

$13 for a bowl of guacamole?? Come on people, get real.

I think I will stick with Alma restaurant.

Alma couldn’t hold a candle to GE’s food. And sorry Bongo, but I’ve seen $17 Herradura Repos in many places at that price point. Great food/service and I’m SO happy to have that garden back.

Also, take Yelp with a grain of salt..many reviewers are either staff members/friends or family of the restaurant or people with an ax to grind.
