MAS, BHA Fight for LPC Funding

The Municipal Arts Society and its supporters, which includes the Brooklyn Heights Association, gathered at City Hall today to protest the City Council’s plan to cut 5 staff positions, amounting to $300K annually, from the Landmark Preservaton Commission:

New York Observer: “During the last two years, increased funding has enabled the LPC to hire more employees, and as a result, the commission designated 26 landmarks and four historic districts,” said Lisa Kersavage, director of advocacy for the Municipal Art Society, in a statement.

The MAS’s multimedia presentation on the issue after the jump. Continue Reading →

Eagle: Penson Stops DOB from Demolishing 100 Clark Street

The Brooklyn Eagle sheds some interesting light on the demolition of 100 Clark Street. According to the report published today, the DOB had decided that the entire structure, not just the top two floors as originally announced, needed to be taken down. Current owners, the Penson Companies went to court to stop the DOB from tearing the entire building down. As a result, the Eagle says, a stop work order has been issued.

Let’s hope that Penson’s plan is to resurrect and restore this landmark building.

P.S. 8 Presents Soldea Island

From P.S. 8 comes this reminder:

Soldea Island is our very first student run play, from PR and the crew to the Assistant Director, actors, and announcers.

Performances of Soldea Island will take place on the 29th at 5:30PM and the 30th and 6:30PM of May at PS 8, 37 Hicks Street, Brooklyn, 11201 in our auditorium.

The play is about two groups of people, the Urples and the Eenies. The Urples have purple hair. They love music, dance, and all kinds of arts. The Eenies however, have green hair and like scientific things. There is a wall of “hatred” that separates them. One day a boy named Havi from the Urple side gets his foot stuck in the wall. When a little girl from the Eenie side helps him to get out, things begin to change on Soldea Island.

The play is based on an illustrated story written by our very own drama teacher, Ms. Noelle. Hope to see you there!

Upcoming Events at First Presbyterian Church

From the BHB Inbox:

The members of First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn are hosting two free community events this summer that celebrate global diversity in the arts.

Event #1 June 8– Global Arts Festival
On June 8, First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn will host the second annual Global Arts Festival, an afternoon of music and dance – everything from African drumming to rhythm and blues to the Moroccan oud – presented along with food, arts, and special children’s entertainment in a friendly neighborhood setting.

Event #2 June 22 – Performance by Siyaya

On June 22, First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn will host a public performance by Siyaya (http://www.jlzwane.sun.ac.za/), an acclaimed South African youth ensemble that is touring nationally and uses a mixture of traditional South African music, pop, jazz and opera to educate audiences about HIV/AIDS prevention. Siyaya’s lively performances promote a sense of global community, as its youthful members, who come from an impoverished township outside of Cape Town, seek to reach out to audiences as cultural ambassadors. (The event is free, but we will collect donations for the group.)

More information is at http://www.fpcbrooklyn.org/

It’s “Elle” on the Promenade.

At about 5:30 this afternoon, I heard a diesel engine idling on Pierrepont Place, looked out my window, and saw a Gray Line tour bus parked as a bevy of blondes in pink dresses were exiting the top deck and heading for the Promenade. I (of course) followed them out, and saw them assembling for a photo shoot, apparently as part of some Reese Witherspoon/Laura Bell Bundy as Elle Woods look-alike contest.

(Could it be a promo for this new MTV Show? – ed.)

Yes, indeed, Chief. The bus had that very “The Search for Elle Woods” logo emblazoned on both flanks. – C.S.
