No Snitching for 101 Clark Street Shooting Victim
by Homer Fink on 13. Aug, 2010 in crime
The Brooklyn Eagle reports that the 28 year old shooting victim attacked August 1 in front of 101 Clark Street is not cooperating with police. The paper says that despite extensive injuries –including two bullets still lodged in his spinal-cord region — the victim, whose name has not been released, is refusing to tell cops about his “probable assailants”.
While this scenario may be difficult for some to understand, it is an issue that law enforcement has been grappling with for several years starting in 1999. The “Stop Snitchin’” movement gained momentum in Baltimore six years ago when a homemade DVD, featuring NBA star Carmelo Anthony, was released. Today, social networks like MySpace and Facebook have scores of groups dedicated to the subject.

Our newest contributor, Caitlin Heikkila, had her prized bicycle stolen the other day near Cranberry Street. She writes:
Becoming Brooklyn: Yes, that’s right. The bike I’ve been raving to you about was snatched from outside of my apartment last night. Despite my massive, weighs-more-than-I-do chain lock, the thief prevailed, cleanly breaking it without leaving a scrap of metal behind. I reported it to the police, but it’s unlikely they will be able to find it.

Eagle: 101 Clark Street Shooting Victim Recovering, Clarifies Its Position on I.D.
by Homer Fink on 03. Aug, 2010 in crime
The Brooklyn Eagle reports that the condition of 28 year old gunned down at 101 Clark Street on Sunday is improving. Two .40 caliber bullets lodged in his spine were removed. During surgery, his spleen was also removed and the paper adds that it’s possible he will also lose his left lung which had collapsed.
As for keeping the victim’s identity private, that paper says it’s a matter of security:
Brooklyn Eagle: Despite readers’ criticisms and pleas, the Brooklyn Eagle, though confirming the victim’s identity on Monday, will not publish those details until they are made public by the police. Police said that as long as the perpetrators remain at large, they will not release the victim’s name for his safety.
“It would be a danger to his life,” a police spokesperson said Tuesday.
While it is clear that his attackers know who the victim is and where he lived, it is not clear if they knew his actual name.
Eagle: We Know the Identity of Shooting Victim
by Homer Fink on 02. Aug, 2010 in crime
In its report on yesterday’s shooting at 101 Clark Street, the Brooklyn Eagle claims to have confirmed the identity of the victim. The paper says it will not disclose that information until law enforcement officials release it:
Brooklyn Eagle: The Brooklyn Eagle confirmed the identity of the victim, but will not publish those details until made public by the police. The victim was a graduate of Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge and is currently engaged to be married, according to his Facebook page.
The victim also reportedly knows who the shooter was.
Police confirmed the victim had about a dozen prior arrests and lived at 101 Clark St., which is a high-rise building with several hundred Mitchell Lama co-op apartments. The victim, a 28-year-old white male with what appears to be Chinese letters tattooed on his left forearm, was wearing white sneakers, baggy white shorts and a red shirt when he was shot.

The NY Daily News provides a little more information on last night’s shooting on Clark Street:
NY Daily News: A 28-year-old man with a troubled past was shot and seriously injured Sunday in Brooklyn Heights, police said.
The victim, whose name was not released, was ambushed at his Clark St. building just after 7 p.m. and shot twice in the back, cops said.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he was in serious condition but was stabilized, police said.
Sources said the victim, who has numerous prior arrests, was the intended target.
Witnesses told cops the gunman – a heavyset man in his 20s – was wearing jeans and a dark T-shirt.
