Oven – Not So Hot?
The much anticipated Oven at 60 Henry Street has been open for business since mid-week. People posting on restaurant website Chowhound are giving it mixed reviews:
"Peter" posted:
Walked by Oven last night and it was open and relatively full. (I skipped it and went to Petite Marche where we each had a solid Steak Frite)
Anyone been?
P.S. It's kind of odd. They have those wooden venetian blinds down — but rotated so you could see in — but it still blocked a lot of the view inside. We both got all the way past without even noticing it was open until one of us saw it out of the corner of our eye and doubled-back. They might want to do something about that.
"fishermb" adds: I walked by there around 9:30 last night and there were only people at 2 tables, it was dead. Might try it tonight, or will get around to it some time over the weekend.
Have you been? Planning?
Patriot Game
Mark your calendar now — on Tuesday 7/3 the folks at Magnetic Field will stage a special edition of the Dick Swizzle Sudden Death Gameshow. "The Patriot Game" will feature some surprises according to Swizzle, who would not comment on what they would be. He did add that he's excited about the opening of Ricky's on Montague Street saying something about mustaches.
Outdoor BBQ at 7pm, gameshow at 8pm.
Magnetic Field is located at 97 Atlantic Avenue.
Pierrepont Parking Problems
In this week's Brooklyn Paper, BHB publisher Homer Fink discusses permit abuse in the nabe:
Brooklyn Paper: Permits a Plague on Pierrepont: Parking is at a premium in Brooklyn Heights even when no laws are being broken. But plenty of laws are — and sometimes by the enforcers of them.
It is illegal to park in a “No Parking” zone, even if your car has a permit from the city, unless that area is designated for use by a specific agency (i.e. NYPD, Department of Education etc). In other words, if you can’t park there legally, neither can the guy with a permit. But respect for regulations is not stopping these scofflaws from congesting our narrow streets.
“A lot of people are parking with impunity,” Brooklyn Heights Association Executive Director Judy Stanton says. She and the BHA were so outraged in January that they took to the streets with notebooks in hand taking down the license plate numbers of parking offenders.
Wig Out! Ricky’s Comes to Montague
It was mentioned in the comments of a previous post, and I can personally confirm it: A Ricky's "beauty shop" will be taking over the space formerly occupied by Tapestry on Montague. Yes, no longer will you have to trek all the way to Manhattan for some glitter and your favorite flavored lube. They have been looking for "high-profile, high trafficked" locations in NYC (and South Beach!) for a while now, and I guess they are large enough to afford the ridiculously high rent.
For those unfamiliar with the chain, Ricky's describes itself as an "edgy, ultra-hip 'beauty shop' specializing in unique fashion accessories, cosmetics, and beauty supplies", but everyone knows all the real fun is in the back room behind the beads. What do you think, will this make Montague fabulous?
Trader Joe’s Coming
Technically it's Cobble Hill , but a Trader Joe's is scheduled to open on Court and Atlantic according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle (thanks to BHB tipster Hoppy):
Brooklyn Eagle: The Eagle has learned that Trader Joe’s will soon be trading in Brooklyn at the corner of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue, a place where passbooks rather than shopping carts used to be the norm. Although none of the principals areready yet to make an official announcement, several sources report that TraderJoe’s, an upscale supermarket chain focusingon specialty items, will take all the space within the former Independence Savings Bank building now owned by Two Trees Management. Long coveted for the new Downtown Brooklyn, Trader Joe’s opted to open its first Brooklyn store — its second in New York — at the juncture of three affluent brownstone neighborhoods: Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill.

Pool Comes to Beach
Confirming Harry Hawk's comment, while taking my morning walk sauna on the Promenade, I noticed that The Floating Pool Lady had been moved from her previous berth between Piers 2 and 3 to a new spot adjacent to the artificial beach.
Open Thread Wednesday
It's already the last Wednesday in June, year is halfway over! This week on OTW:
Does the neighborhood need a 24 hour pharmacy? CVS, Duane Reade, Gristedes etc all close before midnight…
Are you ready for some pizza?
Michael Salmon is not going to be your Next Food Network Star.
Marty Connor votes against term limits. Thoughts?
And whatever YOU'RE thinking about….
Open Vista on Promenade
This morning, returning from my daily battle with Squibb Hill, I noticed workmen starting to remove panels from the bridge that has covered part of the Promenade behind 160 Columbia Heights for some time now. This afternoon, I saw the Promenade clear of all obstructions from end to end.
Laura Albert Speaks to Post
Laura Albert aka JT Leroy talks to the NY Post’s Andrea Peyser in today’s edition. It’s a wacky read:
NY Post: I Still AM the Real Leroy…: LAURA ALBERT is not a teenager or a prostitute, and, at 41, probably not a teenage boy.
But she sailed into the newsroom yesterday – a bone from a raccoon’s penis hanging jauntily from her neck – dropping A-list names like Bono, Madonna and even Paris Hilton. And the middle-aged mom originally from Brooklyn Heights insisted she was, deep down, that teenage, transgendered hooker…
…Albert describes a Dickensian childhood of beatings and sexual abuse. She was a “street kid” who says the JT LeRoy persona became real to her. Continue Reading →
Yassky in Spatsky Over Credit
While Brooklyn Heights residents toil over the recent spike in robberies and parking tickets, our man in the City Council is in a skirmish over vegetable oil…sorta:
New York Sun: Credit for Legislation…: A feud is emerging in the City Council, as two members compete for the authorship of legislation that would require the use of biofuel heating oil in the city.
Council members David Yassky of Brooklyn and James Gennaro of Queens yesterday announced separate bills, almost identical in their wording, that would require all heating oil sold in the city to be composed of 20% biodiesel by 2013.
Both Mr. Yassky, an outspoken environmentalist, and Mr. Gennaro, the chairman of the council's Environmental Protection Committee, say they have been working on their bill for months.
"My bill's the bill that I'm going to be hearing and I'm not going to be hearing Mr. Yassky's bill," Mr. Gennaro said.
Oven Turns On
The much anticipated opening of the pizza restaurant Oven, the latest entry among the new eateries in the location formerly known as the Corner of Cranberry, is slated for Wednesday night (6/27). The restaurant’s management, including BitterWaitress.com founder Chris Fehlingher, are holding a special preview for “VIPs” tonight (6/26). The restaurant boasts a wine list of over 180 selections. (We wonder if the Busy Chef had a hand in creating this “travelogue” of vino.)
Salmon Sleeps with (Like The) Fishes
Brooklyn Heights' entry in The Next Food Network Star, Michael Salmon, was the latest contestant booted off the show on Sunday night. In the final evaluation, Salmon turned on the waterworks, claiming that he had learned to look at himself in a new way. The biggest criticism of our nabe chef by the show's judges was that he came off like a "used car salesman" in his presentations. That critique coupled with his bizarre Vietnam reference when addressing troops at Fort Dix most likely were the root causes of his elimination.
