Trader Joe’s Coming

Untitled-16.jpg

Technically it's Cobble Hill , but a Trader Joe's is scheduled to open on Court and Atlantic according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle (thanks to BHB tipster Hoppy):

Brooklyn Eagle: The Eagle has learned that Trader Joe’s will soon be trading in Brooklyn at the corner of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue, a place where passbooks rather than shopping carts used to be the norm. Although none of the principals areready yet to make an official announcement, several sources report that TraderJoe’s, an upscale supermarket chain focusingon specialty items, will take all the space within the former Independence Savings Bank building now owned by Two Trees Management. Long coveted for the new Downtown Brooklyn, Trader Joe’s opted to open its first Brooklyn store — its second in New York — at the juncture of three affluent brownstone neighborhoods: Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill.

The obsession with one particular chain store? Pathetic. When the revolution comes, you guys are going to be first against the wall. But, nice that the empty void is getting filled — it may take a lot of two buck chuck.

  • eric

The revolution already came. It made everyone poor, cold, and addicted to vodka. Rather unimpressive, really.

uhh…the former Independence Savings Bank? Last time I checked (and that was yesterday), there still is a bank there. A pretty big one at that. But it’s important to note that anything that takes a bank AWAY from this area pretty much can’t possibly be a bad thing. Even if it means replacing it with an upscale market with crap I would never buy…

oh wait…maybe this store will give the even more garbage-y Key Food nearby a run for its money. Count me in now.

the sovereign bank is moving diagonally across the street into the fairly new walentas building–construction has been happening for a couple of weeks now.

I had heard in the past that the bank might be a Trader Joe’s or urban outfitters but it looks like TJ won. How much you want to bet they are going to try and build a few extra residential floors on top of the bank if they can get it approved.

Great news! Our block gets even more great food options. Dinner party @ our place once this opens.

FYI – the current bank is moving across the street into the vacant corner in Two Trees Court House rental building – it’s been under construction for months.

Rightgeous. I’ll no longer need to shlep to 14th St every fortnight for my TJs.

Those who have never experienced TJs before will likely be very angry the first time you shop there. Angry at the years you’ve been paying middleman markup prices at the average chain supermarkets. Your grocery bill will be cut close to 40%.

You will be converted. Resistance is futile.

  • JL

Great news. And to think I used to stop at TJ’s during business trips to California and lug this stuff home. (No, I am not kidding).

  • LD

This is awesome! Can’t wait! All the naysayers will be converted once they see the low prices. But I’ll still get my nuts and tabouli from Sahadi’s! I love those guys and would hate to see TJ’s hurt their business.

  • Billy Reno

Yes!! I haven’t been this excited since they ran a camera up Katie Couric’s colon!! Pot sticker and 2 buck Chuck party at my place, y’all!!

  • nabeguy

I have yet to experience the TJ phenomenon, but I hope their check-out lines are a bit easier than Sahadi’s on a weekend…man, what a scrum that is! However, I’ll stay faithful to Sahadi’s, wait and all.

It’s a small point, but this will actually be the third Trader Joe’s in NY. Construction is moving along on a TJ in Forest Hills, at Metropolitan and Woodhaven Blvd, which will open in the fall..

I heard Urban Outfitters was going in @ Atlantic & Clinton & that 2 Trees was developing the bank into a 35 unit resedential building. Anyone heard that…? Is there a mix up-? Could it be TJ’s @ Clinton/Atlantic?

Maybe it’s just the time I spent in LA, but I thinkg Trader Joe’s is so annoying that it makes Whole Foods almost bearable.

    Scratch that, they both suck.

  • Homer Fink

MB – that WAS going to be the case, not anymore… at least as of today.

AG – you are one Busy Commenter.

Well yeah, if you must drink $2 wine, you prob can’t afford the Heights. Also, it has to be said, right now, as is, Atlantic & Court is the best food shopping around! Green Pea for produce, Pacific Green for produce & high end ingredients, sauces, cheeses (open til midnight), Sahadi’s (needs no introduction!). Fish Tales fish mongerer. Meats… aha, there is a great halal meat joint across from the YMCA. What more could one possibly need? Be careful what you wish for folks. Brooklyn is NOT like other areas. You want 2 buck chuck, maybe you should schlep it home from 14 St.
PS-Pacific Green is so diverse in its selections, NPR did a lengthy segment on them- a veritable gourmet garage in 1/4 the space.

“there is a great halal meat joint across from the YMCA.”

indeed, especially if you like your meat delivered mid-summer in filthy, non-refrigerated vans, and often times dropped right on the sidewalk. have a happy hour drink at the brazen and you can enjoy the show!!!

  • spm

Yay! Finally! Now the big question is WHEN is it opening???

  • steve

I think Trader Joe’s will bring more customers into the general area, which will be beneficial for the smaller shops along Atlantic and Court Streets. And residents of the area will benefit from having more choices and from merchants eager to please them with fresh products at reasonable prices.

  • beth

Well of course I wish this were closer to the North Heights, but I’ll settle for this. Though, if the lines are anything like they are on 14th St, then I won’t be able to shop without a tag-team partner.

  • GHB

Maybe we can start getting good shopping around Clark Street.

  • nabeguy

GHB, I’m with you on that. Passing those empty spaces in the St George is a depressing reminder of wasted opportunities. For the life of me, I’ll never understand why landlords allow commercial properties to endlessly stay off the market waiting for someone to meet their price.

  • Noah Buddy

Given that it’s well known for its prepared food, will the presence of a Trader Joe’s put Busy Chef (or Lassen & Hennig’s for that matter) out of business?

  • Teddy

I’m glad to hear that a TJ is coming (which like Whole Foods is somewhat over-hyped, but not bad). I don’t think the bank building is the best option given the high ceiling which will most likely require the construction of a second floor. When it comes to supermarkets, it’s best to keep everything on the same floor.

  • Bklyn Native

Yes, they do need to keep everything on one floor, however, a supermarket needs almost as much space for inventory storage. The TJs on 14th Street is so small (and crowded) because they don’t have a second floor or a basement to store groceries.

  • Name

How about building a second floor and using it for alcohol sales? TJ’s in Cali has amazing deals on good single malt scotch.

  • hoppy

The ideal thing about TJ’s is not that will supplant specialty stores in the area (e.g. Sahadi’s) but rather provide a much needed alternative to the gross, rude, and questionably maintained supermarkets like Key Food and Gristedes.

Name I think you are right on the second floor thing. Fairway on the hell that is the Upper West Side does the same thing, and it seems very busy.

  • free bird

    huh?
