The giant American elm tree that has graced the courtyard of the Mansion House at 145 Hicks Street was knocked down by Hurricane #Irene overnight. The elm, which faced the axe four years ago was beloved by many in Brooklyn Heights. VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP
The American elm at the Mansion House [145-153 Hicks Street] has come down in the middle of the street, smashing a brick wall at the apartment building, and breaking a window at the house across the street. Fortunately, nobody was parked underneath. We remember the tree and the controversy it caused here.

Proving that man is ephemeral but trees are eternal, the Mansion House American elm tree which had faced the axe last summer blooms for another season at 145 Hicks Street.
Word from the Mansion House is that the coop board is working with Con Ed and others to find ways to save the American elm in its courtyard at 145 Hicks Street. Anyone else from the "inside" have an update?
