The Lobster Sign is Back at Armando’s!

armandos

The Beatles never got back together.  The Dodgers haven’t come back to Brooklyn (yet).  But today a true miracle happened in Brooklyn Heights –  the Armando’s Lobster sign returned to its home on Montague Street.   Brooklyn Bugle/BHB publisher Homer Fink waged a campaign to save the sign, a fixture in the neighborhood for decades,  back in 2008 when the original incarnation of the eatery closed its doors.  Today, like manna from heaven, the sign rose like a phoenix from the ashes (or Mr. Byros’ storage facility) and once again graces Montague Street.  So, the circle is now complete – the lobster is back and the restaurant is great!

Thanks to BHB Newshound “robr” for the pic and to Karl Junkersfeld for the original tip.

Internal E-mails Say Dock Street Bad Site for School

aerial-view-6-12-09Newly released documents reveal that Department of Education architects felt that Two Trees’ controversial Dock Street DUMBO project “would yield a very small school (compromised from our standards) with premium costs due to the mixed use with the high-rise residential building.”

However, the two-year-old internal e-mails do not address the current plans for the site, according to the School Construction Authority. Continue Reading →

Nabe Blogger Chuck Taylor Gives Big Thumbs Up to New Armando’s

BHB pal/ Celine Dion maven/ Brooklyn Heights resident Chuck Taylor and his better half/composer Ayhan Sahin checked out the new Armando’s Restaurant last night.  The verdict:

Smoking Nun: Ayhan and I celebrated my birthday a day late, since he was working all weekend while I was in the Hamptons. Had a grand dinner at Italian restaurant Armando’s just two blocks from home on Montague Street. The joint was originally founded in 1936, shuttered in 2008, and following the hasty retreat of pitiful replacement sammich chain Spicy Pickle, Armando’s modernized its space and reopened Monday, Sept. 28, with a glorious, upscale menu and a bar that is open until midnight—something sorely lacking in this ultra-conservative nabe of Brooklyn Heights. Truly felt like being somewhere brand new in a locale only steps from home. Grade-A experience.

Citizens Union Chief Rips Yassky

A column in this week’s Village Voice deconstructs the David Yassky vs John Liu  Democratic run-off race for comptroller.  In it, Citizens Union honcho Dick Dadey sounds off about Yassky’s flip-flop on term limits:

Village Voice: “He didn’t have any hesitation,” said Dadey. “He indicated to me he would not support overturning the term-limits law without a voter referendum.”

Dadey checked in with Yassky again during a formal visit to City Hall once Bloomberg openly called for the change. “I went up to him and said, ‘David, you’re going to oppose this, right?’ And he said, ‘Of course I am.’ He said it in no uncertain terms. So I marked him down as a ‘Yes’ for our side.”

A few days later, Dadey heard that Yassky was saying something different. “I called him, and he said that he had not yet really made up his mind. I was in disbelief. He said he had not yet come to a final position on the issue and asked that I no longer list him as a ‘Yes,’ but as ‘Undecided.’ I told him, ‘Well, from my point of view, you have changed your mind because you told me on two separate occasions that you were going to oppose this.’ He said, ‘Well, it’s complicated because I am opposed to term limits generally, but I would not like to see this go through.’ ”

The call lasted some 15 fairly heated minutes, says Dadey. “I felt he was backing away from a commitment he had made to me earlier. He was all over the map.”

No matter what your particular stance is on term-limits, Yassky or exactly what “good government” is or should be,  isn’t Citizens Union non-partisan?

By its own description, Citizens Union is:

Citizens Union of the City of New York is an independent, non-partisan civic organization dedicated to promoting good government and political reform in the city and state of New York. For more than a century, Citizens Union has served as a watchdog for the public interest and an advocate for the common good. Founded in 1897 to fight the corruption of Tammany Hall, Citizens Union currently works to ensure fair elections, clean campaigns, and open, effective government that is accountable to the citizens of New York. We do so by informing the policy debate and influencing the policy outcomes that affect the lives of all New Yorkers.

Brooklyn Heights Brownstone Featured in New York Social Diary

NYSD photo

NYSD photo

The Brooklyn Heights brownstone of designer Kathryn Scott and artist Wenda Gu is featured in New York Social Diary:

NYSD: They are both organized and thorough to a point that fascinated us. Kathryn physically learned how to do various skills such as carpentry when the house was being renovated (one floor also serves as an office space) and, a linguist, she made sure she knew enough Chinese to get Chinese craftsmen to perfect her designs for various projects in China, where they also own property.
