Brooklyn is not just home to bleeding heart, lilly livered, namby pamby LIBERALS – it’s also home to the Brooklyn Young Republicans. We’re not sure if the BYR is your grandfather’s GOP, but you can judge for yourself by reading their mission statement. They’ll be hosting a coffee meetup tonight at Heights Cafe [84 Montague Street] at 6:30pm. Details here.
Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar to open in 3 weeks!

((Mark Lahm, left, of Henry's End, and Jim Montemarano, of Cranberry's, are opening the Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar in three weeks (BHB/Sarah Portlock))
The owners of the new Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar were out this morning putting final touches on their new space at 50 Henry St., and owner Mark Lahm said the spot will be open within the next three weeks.
“We wished we could have opened earlier, but there were things out of our control,” Lahm said. “There’s one piece of officialdom we haven’t gotten yet,” but did not elaborate.
On Friday, the State Liquor Authority approved their application and granted them their all-important liquor license. Part of the timing delay, Lahm has explained, is because they wanted to get their own license and not be affiliated in any way with the former Wine Bar at 50 Henry spot that closed in the wake of the Busy Chef scandal last summer.
The paper curtains were down today to reveal new furniture, but Lahm said the curtains might go back up while they put the finishing touches on the completely-redone space. They are also finalizing the menu, which he said early on would be a collection of small plates of cheeses, charcuterie, soups, and “interesting salads.”
Lahm also owns Henry’s End at 44 Henry St., and is partnering with Jim Montemarano, who owns the coffee shop Cranberry’s at 48 Henry St., on the wine bar project.
Demolition derby at old Busy Chef spot
We spotted a full-time demolition derby going on inside the former Busy Chef, Blue Pig, and Oven spots along Henry Street, at Cranberry Street, this morning. One worker said he they’re gutting everything in the place and that they’ll be done by the end of the day.
The owner of Sweet Melissa Patisserie, Melissa Murphy, has said she hopes to open in the hotspot. Earlier today, Mrs. Fink caught up with Murphy at her Cobble Hill outpost, who said she’s still trying to get the space, but the landlord isn’t budging on the rent.
Wubba Wander You
The rules at Hillside are vague when it comes to the etiquette of toys – “Exercise caution with food and toys in the Park” – but the rules among the dogs are so idiosyncratic that we humans have to regulate how sharing works on a highly ad hoc basis. Continue Reading →

CB2 Land Use Committee member/DUMBO resident Andrew Stengel has written an open letter regarding Dock Street DUMBO. It’s posted on DumboNYC.com:
Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandies wrote that “sunlight is the best disinfectant.” Unfortunately, much of the process around Dock Street Dumbo has proceeded mostly when the only light is that of the moon.

Cadman Plaza Park Soccer – Pretty Mellow
Saturday morning, we checked out the controversial soccer players at Cadman Plaza Park. Overall the group of players, mostly men and over 30, seemed downright mellow. While they did take up most of the turf field, there didn’t seem to be much competition for using it. One family played frisbee on the turf while the game was being played. And the only casualty there seemed to be the little boy’s interest in frisbee — seems like he caught “futbol fever” after seeing a goal scored.
Reading at Bookcourt on June 1st, Because I Love Her
It is probably one of our most complicated relationships; fraught with love, fear, jealousy and joy. No other bond is as strong or as long-lasting. We read about it in Greek mythology, Freudian psychology and literature. Yet we still for the most part have to navigate it alone— our relationship with our own mother. We love them, we hate them, we miss them profoundly when they are gone. They are as axiomatic as the sun, the moon and the stars. Read details at Cobble Hill Blog.
NYT on Dock Street
The New York Times ran a story on the opposition to Two Trees’ Dock Street DUMBO project in its online edition on Friday (it ran in print yesterday), along with a nifty Flash graphic showing before and after views from the Brooklyn Bridge:
New York Times: Mr. Walentas maintains that the opposition is being driven by people who would lose views from their condominiums and who are using hyped-up claims about the bridge to whip up sentiment against the project.
For his part, Mr. [Kristian] Roebling, who lives in Brooklyn and is the father of two young children, said the view from his apartment would not change. The proposed building, he said, is just too tall.
“It’s practically touching the bridge,” Mr. Roebling said.
Mr. Walentas said he needed the height of the building to pay for the school below.
“Sometimes we make what even I would agree is an obscene amount of money on certain projects,” Mr. Walentas said. “I think this project is the antithesis of that.”

The Defibulators Cool Ride on Columbia Heights
“Whackabilly” rockers The Defibulators have parked their van on Columbia Heights this holiday weekend. The Brooklyn based combo (do any of them live in Brooklyn Heights?) have a new album, Corn Money, and will be playing Rodeo Bar in NYC on June 5. Their van has been seen before in the neighborhood, most notably in April by Flickr contributor So Cal Metro who says:
1970s Wayne Medicruiser ambulance on a Dodge Tradesman 300 chassis. This thing looks to be in really good shape, like it was only somewhat recently retired. Could it be? Anyway, it now says “The Defibulators” on the sides. Could be a band? Seen in Brooklyn Heights.
The band’s informercial (nsfw) features ventriloquist dummy “Buddy Ebsen-Hackett” but masters of useless information like me (and Poppa Fink and probably Nabeguy… oh and Scales too) will note that this is the consumer version of Edgar Bergen’s Mortimer Snerd.
