Law and Order Takes a Holiday
Reading the 84 Precinct Police Blotter in today’s Brooklyn Eagle, it’s not hard to think we’re in the middle of another mini crime wave in Brooklyn Heights.
The topline: a hold up on Hicks and Joralemon, car theft on Pierrepont, petty thefts at Thai Kitchen and La Traviata, burglary on Remsen Street, and a gang of thieves attacked a woman on State Street. Read the gory details here.
Love Lane Condo Construction Moving Along
Brownstoner reports that construction on the Love Lane Condos is moving ahead. They’re particularly amused by the handpainted sign informing passersby that they can anonymously report unsafe working conditions at the site. They also pose the question what will be easier once the condos are complete — sales or finding a parking space in Brooklyn Heights on weekends?

Hey Man, Let’s Buy Magnetic Field
If we believed it was really easy to execute the doubling pennies theory then Qfwfq, Claude Scales, Norman E-mailer, EJ and I would be lugging tons of pennies into the Commerce Bank on Court Street and buying Magnetic Field. But until that day comes, it’s still up for grabs according to a new posting on Craigslist: Continue Reading →
Powell Takes Stand on Bell Case
Activist/journalist/Democratic candidate for the 10 Congressional District Kevin Powell wrote about the Sean Bell verdict on the Huffington Post recently. The piece is a great example of the leadership potential Powell possesses. Yet another reason to see this Fall’s elections as an opportunity for positive change: Continue Reading →

At Least They’re Real
A BHB tipster sent us this moldy display from a Henry Street eatery. We’re sure they’ve been freshened up by now and we do give kudos to them for not using icky plastic fruit as decoration. For the record, we prefer Moldy Peaches.
P.S. 8 Book Fair Saturday
From the BHB Inbox:
P.S. 8 is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair (open to the public) on Saturday (5/3) from 12-4pm at the school. There will be hundreds of different books in every price range and reading level — and opportunities to purchase books for the school’s library and individual teachers’ wish lists.
Brooklyn Heights Mom, Baby Love Tiny Masters of Today
The New York Daily News covers the BAM set by Brooklyn kid band Tiny Masters of Today and shouts out a nabe mom:
New York Daily News: Tiny Masters…: Just back from their first European tour, the band Tiny Masters of Today is on stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Kids and parents seem equally taken with the scrappy, distorted, garage-punk sounds of singer and bass player Ada, 11, and her guitarist brother Ivan, 14.
“I didn’t expect them to be this good!” said Udoka Mbom, 31, of Brooklyn Heights, whose 19-month-old daughter, Mia, was bopping to the music.
BHA House Tour Needs You
From the BHB Inbox comes this request for help from Martha Atwater of the Brooklyn Heights Association:
We need volunteers to work either the first shift (11:45A-2:30P) or second shift (2:30-5P) of the BHA House Tour on Saturday May 10. The job involves simply helping out in one of the tour houses by directing traffic flow, ensuring visitors don’t break things, etc. In exchange for your help, you receive a free ticket to the tour. If you work the early shift you can visit the other houses after 2:30P, and if you work the second shift we direct you where to pick up your free ticket so that you may take the tour before you are scheduled to work.

Real World Challenger for Ed Towns
MTV Real World alumnus/Brooklyn resident Kevin Powell is fixin’ to give Rep. Ed Towns a run for his money in the 10th Congressional District Democratic primary. Powell aborted his challenge to Towns in 2006 to focus on his efforts helping victims of Hurrican Katrina. He announced his candidacy last year. The “hip hop activist” joins Daniel Squadron and Barack Obama as part of a new generation in touch with the 21st Century vying for office this year. The NY Times profiles him today.
