Paul Giamatti and Gary Shteyngart do Brooklyn Heights

Paul Giamatti and Gary Shteyngart do Brooklyn Heights

“Brooklyn Heights! You know what that means? Cougars.” That’s Paul Giamatti’s advice to author-buddy Gary Shteyngart when Gary gets invited to speak at a book club meeting. Gary makes the most of it at the start, complimenting the hostess on her “beautiful brownhouse,” but then things get dicey. It’s a trailer for the newly released paperback edition of Shteyngart’s novel Super Sad True Love Story. (Yes, books have video trailers these days.) See it here (you’ll have to endure an ad at the start).

Is Giamatti Charging Five Bucks to Take a Photo with Him?

Is Giamatti Charging Five Bucks to Take a Photo with Him?

My pal/entertainment reporter guy/Star Wars maven Steve Iervolino once told me a story about asking Billy Dee Williams for an autograph at a movie junket. Steve’s a huge fan of the franchise, so getting Lando Calrissian to sign something for him was a big deal and totally not something he was looking to resell for a quick buck. So it was a big shock to him when BDW asked him for $25 right there and then to sign a poster.

Word comes today via Perez Hilton that Brooklyn Heights resident/actor/Golden Globe winner Paul Giamatti is reportedly doing the same thing but in this case it’s $5 to take a photo with him. Is he being serious (like BDW) or ironic or is it totally made up?

Bleep! Bleep! Brooklyn Heights Resident Paul Giamatti Cops Golden Globe

Bleep! Bleep! Brooklyn Heights Resident Paul Giamatti Cops Golden Globe

Brooklyn Heights resident/actor Paul Giamatti won the Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Golden Globe Award tonight for his role in the new movie Barney’s Version.

We couldn’t tell if it was crappy Time Warner Cable service or NBC censors that caused some of the actor’s acceptance speech to be dropped out. Giamatti doled out the usual thanks to director, cast (the “trifecta of hotties” who play his wives: Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver and Rachelle Lefevre) and crew. He also mentioned that he ate “five boxes of Godiva chocolate” while sitting in the audience.
Update: Homer’s pal from his radio days “Dead Air Dave” aka the guy who was Howard Stern’s official censor notes that NBC was censoring anyone who said “Christ” or “Jesus Christ”. Giamatti expressed his appreciation for presenter Halle Berry by saying “Jesus Christ… Halle Berry!”

Is Fred Claus, Starring Brooklyn Heights Resident Paul Giamatti, a Holiday Classic?

Is Fred Claus, Starring Brooklyn Heights Resident Paul Giamatti, a Holiday Classic?

With a plethora of cable networks available, the traditional holiday movie choice has moved beyond just It’s a Wonderful Life. Jean Shepherd’s classic A Christmas Story was the first flick to get the wall-to-wall marathon treatment on cable; Scrooged and Elf followed. Now Fred Claus, starring Vince Vaughn, Kevin Spacey and Brooklyn Heights resident Paul Giamatti, seems to be vying for perennial status. Do you think it’s worthy?

Wall Street Disaster Movie Shooting Here; Very Short Commute for Giamatti

HBO’s Wall Street mess flick Too Big to Fail is shooting in Brooklyn Heights through Sunday. McBrooklyn reports that, “Trucks and production equipment …will be taking over Court and Remsen Streets near Borough Hall today and Friday; Court, Montague and Joralemon Streets near Borough Hall Saturday; and Joralemon Street from Adams to Court on Sunday.”

The film, based on Andrew Ross Sorkin’s best seller, features a star studded cast including Ed Asner and The Most Famous Man in Brooklyn Heights Paul Giamatti. Oh and note to the hard working bartenders at Jack the Horse – William Hurt plays Hank Paulson in the movie, maybe he’ll stop by for old time’s sake.

What all this means for parking after the jump. Continue Reading →

Giamatti Moves On Up in Brooklyn Heights

Real Estalker reports that  Brooklyn Heights resident Paul Giamatti has closed on a new $1.3 million coop in the neighborhood.  It’s not too far from his current celebrity crib.  Which is good news as it’s always exciting to see Paul walking around the Heights contemplating his next big role.

Giamatti currently holds the “title” of  Most Famous Man in Brooklyn Heights and is reportedly a member of the secret society Skull & Bones.  He’s been spotted in the Heights recently sporting a shaved head which may or may not have to do with his next role as a down and out laywer.  Shooting starts on that next film,  Win Win, here in NYC soon.

Giamatti’s Sideways Character Turns Japanese

japangiamatti
Alexander Payne’s 2004 opus Sideways, which was a breakout role for Brooklyn Heights resident Paul Giamatti, has been remade in Japanese.  Director Cellin Gluck has unleashed his version of the film, with Giamatti’s character Miles transformed into the less edgy Michio, played by Fumiyo Kohinata.  The venue of the film is changed from Santa Barbara to the Napa Valley, which is more familiar to Japanese audiences.  That flip has at least one wine writer a little miffed and calling on Santa Barbara wine makers to try harder in making their brands more well known worldwide.

As for the movie itself, Japan Times writer Mark Schilling notes:

This is pretty much the approach of the entire film, which rounds off the original’s rough (that is, interesting) edges, particularly Paul Giamatti’s prickly wine-snob writer, while re-engineering the story for Japanese tastes.

This makes box-office sense, since a direct translation of the original would jangle local sensibilities like merlot in a sake cup. Gluck’s “Sideways,” however, has a play-pretend quality, like the Japanese boomers who dud themselves up in cowboy gear to listen to Hank Williams tunes at a club in the Harajuku area of Tokyo. Not that there’s anything wrong with it — but you would never mistake it for the real thing, would you?

You really need to see the trailer… after the jump. Continue Reading →

Giamatti to Star in Cold Souls

The Most Famous Man in Brooklyn Heights, Paul Giamatti, stars in Sophie Barthes’ Cold Souls. The flick will debut at the Sundance Film Festival which kicks off Thursday.

Firstshowing.net: Considering it’s a quiet Christmas weekend and also that the Sundance Film Festival is only 20 days away, we’ve got yet another Sundance related debut this morning. We were sent the first batch of photos from Cold Souls, a dark comedy starring Paul Giamatti that will be premiering at Sundance. In the film, Giamatti (ironically) plays himself, an actor that during an existential crisis decides to explore “soul extraction” as a relief from the burdens of daily life. I thought the concept for this already sounded great, but looking at these photos I’m now convinced to make sure I catch this as soon as possible.

The BHB Ten: 2008

We thought it would be interesting to compile a list of 10 people who live or work in Brooklyn Heights who we think made an impact on our neighborhood, our city, our country or the world.  We asked for your input as well and the list reflects that.

None of those named in the BHB Ten were notified ahead of time regarding their selection.  If you’re on the list (or if you didn’t make it!) we welcome your comments.

And now, the first ever BHB Ten: Continue Reading →
