As of Friday afternoon, March 3, there was still a large hole in Montague Street between Clinton and Henry streets, and so no vehicle traffic on that block. Based on your correspondent’s eyeball survey, most businesses on that block were open. The only exceptions were the Nanatori and Lichee Nut restaurants, which may have suffered […]

Update on Montague Street Water Main Break
Water Main Break Floods Montague Street, Businesses, and R/N Subway Line
Update: According to the MTA website, service has been restored on the R/N line at Court Street. A water main break below Montague Street between Clinton and Henry streets late today flooded several ground floor level businesses and the Court Street subway station, served by the R and (late night) N trains. It caused interruption […]
Elves on Montague
These two very cheerful elves greeted my wife and me on Montague near Henry as we headed for the Greenmarket this morning. They were there as part of the Selfies with Elves promotion, part of the Montague BID’s “Small Business Saturday”. They were handing out “Shop Small” shopping bags; the cardboard bins were for donations […]
Promenade Gardeners’ Bake Sale Saturday
The members of the Promenade Gardens Conservancy, who are responsible for the upkeep of the gardens and for the floral displays we enjoy, are holding a bake sale this Saturday afternoon, November 5, from 12:30 until 3:00, at the Montague Street entrance to the Promenade. All proceeds go to the upkeep of the Promenade gardens.
Bye-Bye, Banana Republic
The windows are papered over, and a sign on the door confirms that Banana Republic is leaving the neighborhood. We’ve got the Banana Republic factory store (bargains galore!) on Fulton Mall, but a the loss of a reasonably priced option for decent clothing (even if it is a national chain) is not, in this writer’s […]

The holiday giving program, DROP SHOP EXPERIENCE TASTE, got underway on #SmallBusinessSaturday on November 28th and runs through December 28th. So far the program has collected […]
Chocolate Works: How Sweet it Its!
When it opened this past June, Montague Street’s Chocolate Works’ original design was slick and gleaming white. But by August, owner Shlomi Avdoo felt the confectionery should have a more “homey feel” and undertook a quick renovation. The wall of candy by the pound, glass displays of chocolate truffles and fudge remain. But the high […]
An Imminent Opening for the Bossert?
Can it be true? Can the long-awaited grand–and I do mean grand–re-opening of the Bossert finally be upon us? The Brooklyn Paper says, yes, indeed. Or, maybe. Fen Hotels, which runs dozens of hotels across Latin America and a handful in the United States, will be the operator of the landmarked Montague Street hotel and […]
Montague Milled, Not Paved; Nothing Done Elsewhere
I’ll confess to having felt a bit curious when it was announced last Friday that various streets in and around Brooklyn Heights, including my home street, Montague, were to be paved the following Monday (last night) and Tuesday nights. After all, the affected streets had not yet been milled; a necessary prelude to repaving. Indeed, […]
