A crane has been placed mid-block and tree branches on the street are being cut down (with City permission) to allow a clear path for the removal of the tree that came down in the back yard at 34 Sidney Place following Hurricane Irene’s passage on Sunday.
Sawdust Memories: Mansion House Elm Ain’t Nothin’ but Mulch Now
BHB reader “Carl” shot these photos of yesterday’s clean up of the Mansion House American Elm, which met its demise early Sunday morning. Just as many of the trees felled by Hurricane Irene and its aftermath, Brooklyn Heights’ beloved elm will be ground down into mulch. “Too bad it couldn’t be turned into lumber to create something beautiful,” our tipster laments.

If a Tree Falls in Brooklyn Heights… Report It!
This just in from CB2′s Robert Perris:
Downed Trees
The 311 call system is currently operating at capacity. Fallen tree or branch removal requests can be made on-line. The City removes street trees and large branches that have fallen to the ground in front of houses, in parks, and in other public spaces. The City also removes trees or branches that are blocking sidewalks or streets, as well as branches that are cracked or hanging and about to fall.

Big Tree Falls on Joralemon Street

Just as your humble publisher was mulling over when to move his car out of the relative safety of the Cadman Plaza garage (tonight?), comes this dispatch from Karl Junkersfeld:
A very large tree on Jorelemon near Willow Place just came down and i got the video to prove it. Totally wrecked 2 cars that were parked.
And while we’re at it, Val Frankel alerts us about that tree:
Took this picture an hour ago. While we were standing there, a huge branch came down right in the middle of the street. The tourists jumped!

More tree damage reported
“Phyllis”, who lives in the north Heights, has lost a London Plane tree. She reports:
grew this one from a seedling that took root in my backyard about five years ago, must have blown in from the park across the street. Will miss the shade, screening and wonderful sense of a Brooklyn treed back yard.
Just now – tree down on Sidney Place
A 50-foot tree in the back yard of 34 Sidney Place was just uprooted by the post-Hurricane wind gusts and came crashing down on the back side of the building, causing some minor damage to the fraternity at 36 Sidney Place. Fire Dept is on the scene.
After #Irene: A Walkabout in Brooklyn Heights
Qfwfq and I took a walk around the neighborhood around 1pm today to survey the hurricane…errrrr… TROPICAL STORM damage. From what we saw, the downing of the Mansion House American Elm was by far the most dramatic.
We noted some stores who taped their windows and experience some wind conditions. Photos and video after the jump. Continue Reading →
Evacuation Order Lifted; MTA Service Still Suspended
The evacuation order for Zone A, which includes One Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Park itself, as well as some low-lying areas of DUMBO and Vinegar Hill, was lifted effective 3:00 p.m. Meanwhile, according to the MTA’s website:
MTA crews are reporting widespread impacts following Hurricane Irene, including track and yard flooding, downed trees and power outages across our region. We are moving as quickly as possible to restore service while ensuring the safety of our customers, employees and equipment. Determinations about the timing of restoration of services will be made after assessments are complete and in consultation with the Governor and Mayor.
Update: The MTA will restore “limited bus service” beginning at 4:30 p.m. today, starting in Manhattan and the Bronx, then proceeding to Brooklyn and Queens, but not Staten Island, where conditions are still unsuitable. No fares will be charged today. The PATH will run again starting at 4:00 a.m., but no word yet on city subways or commuter trains.
Tree Down on Columbia Heights
BHB’s Heather Quinlan sends in the photo of a downed tree on Columbia Heights. BHB super-commenter David on Middagh says, “The Columbia Heights tree was a small Honey Locust, and only the crown came down.”
Qfwfq and I noticed that this had been cleaned up by about 1pm today. Continue Reading →
#Irene Takes Out Mansion House Elm
The giant American elm tree that has graced the courtyard of the Mansion House at 145 Hicks Street was knocked down by Hurricane #Irene overnight. The elm, which faced the axe four years ago was beloved by many in Brooklyn Heights.

East River Flowing into Brooklyn Bridge Park
Hurricane #Irene’s “wrath” has caused the East River to overflow onto Piers 4 and 5 of Brooklyn Bridge Park as this BHB reader photo from “Owen” shows. Residents of One Brooklyn Bridge Park, between Piers 5 and 6, were asked to evacuate as it falls in one of the city’s most flood prone areas, Zone A. Continue Reading →
Hurricane #Irene – A Tree Falls in Brooklyn
The American elm at the Mansion House [145-153 Hicks Street] has come down in the middle of the street, smashing a brick wall at the apartment building, and breaking a window at the house across the street. Fortunately, nobody was parked underneath.
We remember the tree and the controversy it caused here.
