Greenmarket Expands to Thursdays
With warmer weather comes the addition of a third day of shopping at the Brooklyn Borough Hall Greenmarket. Beginning tomorrow, the Greenmarket will be open on Thursdays, in addition to its year-round days of operation, Tuesdays and Saturdays. The hours will be, as always, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Great Wall DOH’d!

It looks like the NYC Department of Health has shut down another Henry Street eatery, as Great Wall [60 Henry Street] appears to have been shut down. No one answered the phone there at 5pm this evening. BHB commenter Nick reports: Continue Reading →
Heights Prime Meats – Open for Business, Telephone on the Fritz
Mrs. Fink phones in with this critical update — if you’ve been having trouble trying to phone Heights Prime Meats on Clark Street to place your holiday order you’re not alone. The shop has been experiencing phone troubles this week. They’ve provided us with an alternate number – 347-995-5066, ask for Tony.
This is the most commotion around the butcher shop since they were “featured” on As the World Turns!
Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra performs at Plymouth Church
The Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra performed to a full house at the Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims on March 27. The program was a delightful mix of both traditional and “off-beat” selections.
The evening began with Laideronnette, Empress of the Pagodas, the third movement of Maurice Ravel’s “Ma Mere L’Oye.” A wonderfully experimental work on the pentatonic scale, this airy, oceanic composition is modern yet traditional. It was followed by Serge Prokofiev’s infinitely complex “First Violin Concerto.” After a brief intermission, the evening concluded with Tchaikovsky’s complete “Fifth Symphony.”
For this writer, the highlight of the evening was Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto. Soloist Masha Lankovsky makes her violin speak flawlessly on many emotional levels. Her two curtain calls were well deserved. Continue Reading →
Crop to Cup Opens on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn Heights
Our pals at Brooklyn Based post news of the official opening of Crop to Cup (aka @139 Atlantic) at 139 Atlantic Avenue:
Brooklyn Based: The shelves are lined with McClure’s Pickles, Nunu Chocolates, Early Bird Granola, and Kumquat Cupcakery’s miniature cupcakes, which are baked in-house, (they’re planning to hold a contest for a Crop to Cup-exclusive cupcake flavor in the coming weeks) and the cafe will sell their own baked goods like muffins and oatmeal cookies. These locally sourced foodstuffs are a welcome addition to the area–until now Brooklyn’s homemade bounty has been harder to find in Brooklyn Heights than in Williamsburg or Park Slope. Crop to Cup will also be a delivery spot for people who sign up for Basis’ Good Food To You drop-off program, a weekly CSA-style service that delivers locally sourced fruit, produce, meat, and dairy.

Haystack, located at 130 Clinton Street (between Joralemon and Livingston) is the topic of this Brooklyn Independent Television profile, one of a series about neighborhood people and institutions.
YouTube User Hearts Brooklyn Heights
Queens resident/YouTube user “hitchcockhill” fantasizes about living in Brooklyn Heights. He loves our humble hamlet so much that he’s created a Tron-like homage….. errr sumthin’.
Lookey Loo – 220 Columbia Heights #5
Brownstoner made this sweet pad at 220 Columbia Heights its House of the Day today and we couldn’t resist sharing the official marketing video with you. Holy moley! Priced at $2.125 million, it’s just out of our BHB Clubhouse budget. Which is killing us because this Renaissance Revival building is named checked on page 53 of Clay Lancaster’s seminal book Old Brooklyn Heights: New York’s First Suburb.
It’s listed at Halstead by agents/video stars Thomas Brophy and Linda VanderWoude.

Brooklyn Paper Offers Guide to Pier 1
The Brooklyn Paper has published a useful guide to the newly opened Pier 1 section of Brooklyn Bridge Park. One downer: there are, at present, no “facilities”, which seems especially problematic given the presence of a playground.
Update: According to Curbed, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation promises portable potties within three weeks. Until then, depend on the kindness of River Cafe.
Brooklyn Heights Residents Tom van den Bout and Brenda Nelson Win Preservation Award
At the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s 20th Presentation of the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards to be held on April 21, Brooklyn Heights’s Tom van den Bout and his wife Brenda Nelson will be honored for their architecture firm NV/da’s work on 36 Grace Court in the Heights.
Of the projects to be recognized this year at the American Museum of Natural History, which include the Museum itself, the Empire State Building lobby, and The High Line, 36 Grace Court is the only private residence.
“It’s a little intimidating,” van den Bout said, laughing. NV/da will accept the award along with the home’s owners, the contractor, and all of the sub-contractors involved in the restoration, which took place from November 2008 until July of last year. Continue Reading →
Pierrepont Playground Easter Egg Hunt Saturday

Pierrepont Playground, located at Pierrepont Street and Columbia Heights, will be the site of the Brooklyn Heights Playground Committee’s annual Easter egg hunt this coming Saturday, April 3, beginning at 10:00 a.m. (“sharp” saith the BHPC, so tell Dylan and Madison not to dawdle, or all the eggs will be gone). The Committee adds:
Volunteers are still needed to set-up, bake and sell cookies etc. If you can help please contact us at info@bhplaygrounds.org
The BHPC is also looking for local parents interested in joining our Board of Directors, if you are interested please let us know.
Yes, there will be a bake sale. Don’t tell Joel Klein.
Erratum: A thousand pardons to BHPC for not noticing that this event is now called the Spring egg hunt. No worries: the eggs are strictly non-sectarian.
