Alternate-Side Parking Returns Sept. 14

image0012Just received word that starting September 14, alternate-side parking regulations will go back into effect in the Brooklyn Heights area, following a nine-week suspension as new signs were installed.

The suspension affected the Brooklyn Heights area north of Joralemon Street while the Department of Transportation installed more than 2,000 new, reduced street sweeping regulation signs.

Starting September 8, however, the small area south of Joralemon Street and north of Atlantic Avenue (but not including those two streets) will have alternate-side regulations suspended for their own six to eight week replacement period. Continue Reading →

Markowitz Featured in Good Housekeeping Article

BH resident Valerie Frankel recently set out on a mission to curb her complaining, and chronicled her quest in Good Housekeeping. In her piece, Frankel speaks to Marty Markowitz about how politicians replace words with negative connotations with positive sounding words:

I called Marty Markowitz, president of the great borough of Brooklyn (a.k.a. home), to ask about semantics versus reality. “You can be optimistic and realistic at the same time,” he said. “I know times are tough and people are hurting, but if you’ve got a sour puss, everyone feels sour along with you. Those of us in leadership positions have to reinforce the positive instead of dwelling on the negative.” He encouraged me to count my blessings. Yes, my fridge was broken, but I could afford take-out. I still had a house to keep my broken fridge in.

I tried to channel Marty, to put on a sunshiny puss. But it was a struggle — I mean, a journey. Clearly I had no future in politics.

“Other” Ken Speaks Out in Council Race

NYC Council D-33 candidate Ken Baer is profiled in the Brooklyn Eagle:

Brooklyn Eagle: “I am the only candidate among seven who does not use a car, so I won’t need a special parking permit. I travel by mass transit and favor bicycling,” said Baer. His background includes being the New York State Sierra Club leader, filing eminent domain lawsuits for “Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn” on Atlantic Yards and being an accountant.

The Democratic primary for the 33rd NYC Council District is September 15. On September 14, we will announce the BHB Reader’s Candidate based upon the results of this poll. This is a new poll, so if you voted in our previous “unofficial” one, you’ll need to vote one more time.

BHB, the Brooklyn Bugle and Cobble Hill Blog’s editorial board never endorses candidates. Sure we may stir the pot a little but the act of endorsing a candidate is the sole domain of you, our readers. Vote away! Continue Reading →

Marty Backs Lopez’s Levin for 33rd

Brooklyn Beep Marty Markowitz endorsed Vito Lopez staffer Steve Levin as his pick of the Herd for the 33rd yesterday:

Brooklyn Paper: In thinly veiled language, Markowitz made it clear that he endorsed Levin because he is the only candidate who supports the city’s plan for the Broadway Triangle, which opponents say is flawed because the city gave a no-bid contract to two Lopez-linked non-profits.

“I know Steve’s opponents think process is more important than results … but he understands that results are the most important thing,” said Markowitz.

How does this make “the people” feel?  Well there’s only one guy who can sum up what some folks in Brooklyn are feeling – Atlantic Yards Report’s Norman Oder:

Atlantic Yards Report: One of the enduring (and simplified) debates regarding the legacies of urbanist Jane Jacobs and master builder/power broker Robert Moses is the balance between results and process.

You can’t make an omelet, Moses liked to say, without breaking eggs, and Moses was notably callous about the impact of his major projects on the people living in the way. On the other hand, neighborhood activists invoking Jacobs have used process to gum up any change, even when it might be wise and even though Jacobs did believe in certain big projects, like public transit.

Park Progress: Twenty-Fifth Report, and a Contest Winner

Your correspondent has returned from vacation, and resumed his photographic rounds.

jsw_img_6945_edited-1
North end, Pier 1, Tuesday, August 25, 2009. In my previous report, I proposed a contest to name the hill that has been constructed on the north end of Pier 1, which begins near the bottom of this photo, with its sinuous route traced by a road or walkway leading up to a summit near the photo’s center. One reader, “Willowtown”, proposed calling it “Regina Ridge” in honor of Regina Myer, President of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation. Another, “Rochdalian”, suggested “Whitman Hill”. (A third advocated naming it for a Whitman poem.) I’ve decided to combine the two proposals and submit that the whole structure be named “Regina Ridge”, but that its summit be called “Whitman Peak”.
