Biviano and Simon Spar Over Real Estate Contributions

The Doug Biviano campaign today questioned fellow 33rd District City Council candidate Jo Anne Simon’s connections to developers and real estate interests.

At last week’s debate for candidates for the council seat, Simon said that she “[hasn’t] accepted any contributions from real estate interests” in response to a question about her resistance to taking a position on the Gowanus Superfund site.

An examination of the New York City campaign finance board’s database, however, shows campaign contributions totaling $10,498 from individuals who list “real estate” in their occupation title. Continue Reading →

Curry Spot in Brooklyn Heights May Be Good

This just in from “Christina” via the BHB Facebook inbox:

I wanted to tell you about the new Indian restaurant at 151 Remsen Street (used to be Curry Leaf and, more recently, East Meets West). We ordered in from there tonight and the food was AMAZING! Finally, the Heights has a decent place for curry! My husband grew up in the UK where the Indian food is a big deal, and he said it’s the best he’s had since he left there. We tried the Peshwari Naan, Chicken Vindaloo (it’s spicy spicy), Chicken Tikka Masala, Onion Bahjia and Aloo Motor Gobi. The entire meal rocked!!! A nice touch was the free rice pudding and 25% off the meal! The meal was so good, we called them mid-meal to thank them!

The Brooklyn Heights location site was under construction, but you can use the Bronx location’s menu for now.

Anyone else try Curry Spot? Thoughts?

Our man in the NYC Council/Brooklyn Heights resident David Yassky has earned the backing of the NY Times in his bid for NYC Comptroller.  In an editorial published today, the paper says, “Mr. Yassky makes the best case for making better use of the powerful tools handed a city comptroller. He promises to use the audit powers — including new ones overseeing the city’s education contracts — to increase productivity and efficiency.”

Yassky commented this morning via Twitter: “I am EXTRAORDINARILY PROUD to have the endorsement of the NY Times in this election Thank you to all for support. We can do it!”

Brooklyn Paper Hates Brooklyn Heights Landmark Lighting Plan

Earlier this month, it was announced that a project to replace Brooklyn Heights street lamps with historically accurate “Bishop’s Crooks” fixtures would begin soon.   The paper has written about the $650k in Federal and NYC dollars being used to fund Phase 1 of the proposed $2.7 million plan calling it “pork”.  This week the paper continues its assault on our landmark district with a cartoon poking fun at the streetlight plan.

While it’s true that we’re in a recession, these fixtures will last far longer than this economic downturn.  What do you think?

Daily Gotham Deconstructs Doug Biviano

Daily Gotham’s “Mole 333″ has a beef with Brooklyn Heights resident/ NYC Council D-33 candidate Doug Biviano:

Daily Gotham: I first met Biviano at an IND meeting before IND imploded and I took a possibly permanent leave of absense from their board. Doug was very earnest, thoughtful and seemed very honest and decent. Past times I wrote about Biviano I emphasized that he has little chance, but that I wanted to see him stay in local politics and that he may well have a good future. Now he is starting to use smear tactics and lies that could actually alienate some of the people he might like to have on his side in later years.
