Today's NY Times covers the continuing drama of Brooklyn Bridge Park or something we like to call – Condos or Don'ts. We pick up the story at the part where the BBPDF will fight the "good fight": Continue Reading →
Now Open: New Busy Chef on Court Street
A few days ago, the papers came down in the windows and Busy Chef officially opened its new location on Court Street. The front of the store serves as a coffee bar, while the back room has refrigerated units for their prepared foods, and a handful of tables for downtown workers to sit and enjoy a sandwich. The offerings looked pretty similar to what is available at the Henry Street location. While the Chef is now open for business, there unfortunately is still no movement on the supposed Boar’s Head storefront at Court and State.
At Least Paul Still Has His Fans

Sure Heather Mills just walked away with something like 1/8 of Paul McCartney's net worth but hey at least he and his old band still have fans as Nick of nabe flack firm Shore Fire Media points out:
Suite16: Like nearly every music-aware human on planet earth I'm a big fan of the Beatles, and it looks like I'm not the only one in Brooklyn. Spotted this morning on Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights.
Corcoran: Try Brooklyn Heights!
Here's a nugget from Barbara Corcoran's column in today's NY Daily News:
Q. I am looking to buy an apartment in New York within an hour's commute of Manhattan. I'm 25, make about $50,000 a year and want to be in a neighborhood with other young people. What can I afford and where should I look?
A. You should be able to buy a place for about $230,000 to $280,000. That depends on how much cash you have to put down.
Brooklyn Heights is most convenient, only a train stop away from Manhattan on the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains, as well as the A, C, M, R and W trains. You can buy a studio co-op there without breaking your budget.
If you don't mind a longer commute, you'll get more space for your money further away — in Kensington or Clinton Hill, where studios cost $200K and 1BRs can be bought for $250K. But it's a one-hour train ride to midtown.
Sign of the times?

What Would You Do with Magnetic Field?
You don't have to be a "genius" to know that the BHB Community is quite opinionated. So why don't we throw that firehose of reason and passion on an issue we're all concerned about — what's going to happen to the space currently known as Magnetic Field at 97 Atlantic Avenue. We know that the bar is for sale and there's a juicy 7 year lease attached to it. Ok smarty pants, what would you do with that space?
BHB One Year Ago: Curious, Aren’t You?
BHB March 19, 2007: The mysterious “partners” who own and operate Corner of Cranberry have fired their first salvo in the rebirth of the location formerly known as Spanish themed restaurant Aficionada.
On Sunday, BHB spotted a small sign in the papered-up windows of the restaurant begging the question to passersby “curious, aren’t you?” Read more
Update: Oven and Busy Chef are nearing their first anniversary, with BC opening another outlet soon on Court Street.

Who is the Best Brooklyn Heights Dog Walker?

We know that Brooklyn Heights loves their pooches, heck some of them have better lives than many humans we know. "Happy Heights Resident" submits this to the BHB Inbox:
The main reason I am writing is because me and the Mrs. are interested in getting a puppy. Of course rises the question of who will walk the puppy while we are at work? So the solution would be a dog walker, but apparently there so many to choice from, there's the Hungarian Pair, then Jenefer and Valerie, Ginger, Vala?………….So I was thinking wouldn't it be great if the Heights blog rated them with user comment?
So, who are the best dog walkers in Brooklyn Heights? Comment away!

Actor Drops Out of Film Shot Here
Natalie Portman's portion of New York I Love You,which was shot here in Brooklyn Heights, has lost one of its lead actors. Abraham Karpen, a Hasidic Jew who lives in Brooklyn, dropped out of the film reportedly after being pressured by his rabbis:
ABC News: Rabbi Orders Actor to Quit: He really didn't grasp that this was a movie and that Natalie Portman was a star. He thought it was more of a commercial, a short thing," said Isaac Abraham, a Hasidic community leader. "I think he was a little naive. He didn't grasp the magnitude of what he was doing."
The magnitude of what Karpen was doing became clear after photos of the budding actor walking with Portman under the Brooklyn Bridge surfaced in the media.
"We don't watch TV, use the Internet or see movies. It's against our religion and our traditions. There are strong guidelines about what you can and can't do," Abraham said.
