Look Out Marty, Here Comes “Kid” Squadron
Has Marty Connor reached the end of the road after three decades in the New York State Senate?
The notion that Marty may have lost his magic touch is not a new notion. Last year he found in himself in a pickle over parking on Pierrepont with his NYS permit as well has raising a fuss over whether or not corn is a vegetable among other things. So it's no surprise that the legislator is facing an opponent in this year's election. The challenge comes in the form of another member of the Facebook generation entering the Brooklyn political fray (see Yassky's Seatsky coverage). He's 28 year old Carroll Gardens resident Daniel Squadron, a former aide to Senator Chuck "Is it Sunday? Must be time for a press conference" Schumer.
If you're thinking Marty's not freaking the f*** out, read this passage from a recent NY Daily News report:
Running For Yassky’s Seatsky

Let the games begin! As City Councilman David Yassky enters the race for City Comptroller, three folks have thrown their hat into the ring to represent the 33rd District.
We're so engerized (not!) about this group that we'll give you the topline but suggest you read this article in the Brooklyn Paper for the deets…
The Best We Can Do?!
Evan Thies - 28 years old, grew up in New Hampshire. Worked for Yassky. Lives in Willamsburg.
Fink thinks: Shouldn't he be running a web 2.0 start up… err sumthin'? Just sayin' he's got that look about him. Won't make up my mind on him until we know how many pairs of khaki pants he owns.
Stephen Levin – 27 years old, grew up in New Jersey. Works for Assemblyman Vito Lopez. Lives in Greenpoint.
Fink thinks: He ran an anti-predatory lending campaign. He might just have a heart of gold. Won't make up my mind until he plays Match Game at Magnetic Field. Yes, that's an invitation Stevie. For that matter, all of you are invited.
Jo Anne Simon – 55 years old, grew up in Yonkers. Attorney focusing on the rights of the disabled. Lives in Boerum Hill.
Fink thinks: Jeez, she's qualified for this job but we worry about her taking the pay cut. If we had to endorse (hey we don't endorse we just pontificate, ok?) she would have the inside track.

Brooklyn Heights Open House – with Art!
Some folks will say this is a sign of a downturn in the local real estate market, while others will chime in and say it's an innovative way to stage an apartment. The NY Daily News reports that Corcoran's Vicki Negron is "framing" her listing at 75 Livingston Street with artworks by 80s icon Jean Michel Basquiat, valued at over $2 million. They'll be on view beginning February 3.
Montague Money Honey Cops to Fraud
Jennifer Wilkov, a Montague Street financial advisor, plead guilty yesterday to stealing over $1.6 million from investors in bogus real estate deals. Wilkov had two cohorts in the "fix and flip scam". She's also the author of Dating Your Money:
Brooklyn Eagle: Brooklyn Heights Financial…: Wilkov, 39, admitted she used her job at American Express Financial Advisors to find victims in New York City to invest in a fraudulent scheme to fix up houses in California and resell them for big profits.
Prosecutors said Wilkov and two accomplices told investors they planned to buy single-family houses in Southern California worth up to $1 million, renovate and sell them, and share the profits with investors. Investors never received any money.[via McBrooklyn]

Ivo’s Doc Roomie Silent on Arsenal
Dr. Michael C. Clatts, the AIDS researcher roomate of Ivaylo Ivanov, the man charged with last year's hate spree against local synagogues and keeping a large cache of pipe bombs and guns, is not cooperating with the NYPD according to the New York Sun. He was picked up by police yesterday at JFK Airport upon returning from Vietnam. The Sun also reports that Clatts has apologized to his neighbors at 58 Remsen in an email:
NY Sun: Researcher is Mum…: A neighbor who lives in the building, James Robinson, said Mr. Clatts had sent out an e-mail apology message on Monday to all of the residents of the building.
"He said that he was disturbed about the news he was getting," Mr. Robinson said. "He was very apologetic, and said that he had absolutely no idea about all of this."
Mr. Ivanov, known as Ivo to his neighbors, has alternately explained the arsenal by saying he needed it for protection and that he was planning to use the bombs for fishing. He has also claimed to be Jewish.
Actor Heath Ledger, Former Area Resident, Found Dead
Australian born actor and former Boerum Hill resident Heath Ledger was found dead in his apartment in lower Manhattan today. He was in his bed, with a bottle of sleeping pills nearby. Ledger was 28.
During his time in the area, Ledger and former companion Michelle Williams could be seen out and about on Montague Street as well as at Bar Tabac on Smith Street. BHB reported on Ledger's outing watching bocce at Floyd in 2006.
UA Theater: Nightmare on Court Street

From the BHB Inbox comes this dispatch from a reader:
My family of 4 have lived in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill for 6 years now. We’ve noticed a deterioration in quality of service and cleanliness at the UA Court Street Stadium 12 over the years (not that it was that nice to begin with). My wife has come to a point where she wants to boycott the theatre as she thinks its “nasty”. I’ve written Regal Cinemas customer care, have inquired whether the Brooklyn Heights Association has any type of agenda around the theatre and wanted to inquire via your blog whether anyone else has any ideas. My theory around the theatre is as follows: from what I can observe, this theatre is likely incredibly profitable and conducting a renovation or even increasing the staff resources to keep it cleaner probably wouldn’t change much in terms of the attendance. That being said, if other people agree with my sentiments, I’d suggest some type of collective efforts via Regal Cinemas corporate to address these issues. I’ll leave it at that.
Do you agree? Is the UA Court Street a lousy place to see a movie? Regal Cinemas has a nifty feedback form on its website if you’d like to give them your opinion.

NY Sun: Were Bombs Meant for Synagogues?
The NY Sun reports that the NYPD is investigating whether Ivanov the Terrible's pipe bombs were meant to be used on the synagogues of Brooklyn Heights. As previously reported, Ivanov has confessed to being the person who scrawled swastikas and anti-semitic phrases on synagogues here last year:
NY Sun: Police Investigating… : Penny Kaufman, who lives downstairs from the two men and who accompanied police to the apartment on Sunday when they first found the pipe bombs, said she was shocked to hear that Mr. Ivanov was connected to the anti-Semitic incident.
"He seemed like your average punk kid, but that thought never crossed my mind, and I'm saying this as a Jew," Ms. Kaufman said. "I'm aghast."
Police were looking into whether Mr. Ivanov had any ties to terrorists, but officials said yesterday that he seemed to fit the typical description of a hate crime perpetrator: a young white man acting alone.

Remsen Arsenal Linked to Hate Crimes?
The owner of a cache of weapons and pipebombs on Remsen Street has been identified as Ivaylo Ivanov, an ex-con with a long criminal past, the NY Post reports. He's also raised the NYPD's interest as a suspect in the synagogue hate spree last year. Ivanov shared the apartment at 58 Remsen with Dr. Michael C. Clatts, a noted AIDS researcher. No word on if Clatts, who is currently in Vietnam, knew of Ivaylo's stash of weapons: Continue Reading →

Update on Remsen Arsenal
Reports from 58 Remsen Street today tell us that the suspect who appears to have had a small arsenal of guns and pipe bombs is a 31 year old male. He's been treated at Long Island College Hospital being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound and is in police custody awaiting charges. His name has not been released.:
WNBC-TV: NYPD Finds Explosives…: Meanwhile, residents of the affected block of Remsen Street — a small, quiet block lined with tidy, pricey buildings — have been returning to their homes. Helen Silverstein, who along with her husband Lou lives next door to the apartment building, said she had been awakened by police officers frantically ringing her doorbell at about 4 a.m. "I heard one of the police officers talking about there being blood all over," in the apartment, said Silverstein, who added that she did not know the man in question. "It was very alarming to think that this could be going on right next door to you."
