Grace Church Fair This Saturday

This Saturday, February 2, Grace Church, 254 Hicks Street (corner of Hicks and Grace Court) will hold its annual Winterfair.  From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., you may shop for children's clothes and toys, men's and women's clothing, books and CDs, sporting equipment, flowers, furniture, housewares and tchatchkes.  An activity room for children will also be available.  From 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the cafe will serve delicious hot luncheon entrees.  Starting at 6:30 p.m., there will be a gala cocktail reception and silent auction.  Among the prizes available (more…)

For Whitman Fans

log-engraving-tl.jpgThe Brooklyn Museum Library, located in the Museum at 200 eastern Parkway, will present a lecture on Walt Whitman's apprenticeship with Brooklyn printers and his subsequent work at the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library, which evolved into the Brooklyn Institute and ultimately into today's Brooklyn Museum.  The lecture, which will be given by poet and librarian Jeffrey Croteau, will be this Saturday, February 2, beginning at 3:00 p.m.  If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to library@brooklynmuseum.org, as seating is limited.

NY Sun Grades Private Schools: St. Ann’s Earns “B”, Packer “C”

The NY Sun has published its review of New York City’s private schools. Overall St. Ann’s is given a B, while Packer goes home with a “gentleman’s” C.  Packer also earns kudos for Best Urban Campus, while St. Ann’s receives big ups for its “Hipsters in Training”.  In the all important Harvard race, it’s St. Ann’s 5 Packer 0 (based upon students attending in the last three years). Never Forget: 1/31/07

It was one year ago today that Boston freaked out and turned nabe resident Sam Ewen's publicity stunt for  the Cartoon Network's Aqua Teen Hunger Force into a DAY OF TERROR. Thanks to the power of the internets, the persecution of Sam and his animated pals at the hands of Boston city officials will never be forgotten.

The stunt cost parent company Turner Broadcasting $2 million dollars in a settlement.

B’Stoner: Bossert For Sale

Brownstoner reports today that the Watchtower Tract and Bible Society has put the Bossert Hotel on the block.  The hotel has been called  the "Waldorf Astoria" of Brooklyn. The landmark building once housed many of the Brooklyn Dodgers and its roof deck was a celebrity destination in the 1920s.  It's hard to put a price on such a storied property and the Watchtower has opted not to set one — they've put out a "Request for Best Offer" to potential buyers. The hotel currently has 224 apartments.  

How much do you think it'll go for? Think it will become condos? Co-ops? Or will a new group join the neighborhood? (more…)
