The Brooklyn Heights Cinema will be showing 12 Years a Slave, director Steve McQueen’s drama about a free African American New Yorker kidnapped and sold into slavery, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender, and with a cast including Heights resident Paul Giamatti. The Cinema is also showing Robert Redford’s All Is Lost, in which he portrays a solo ocean sailor’s fight for survival after his boat is almost destroyed by a drifting freight container. Bargemusic will present works for string quartet by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven in two “Masterworks” concerts, one on Saturday starting at 7:00 p.m., and one on Sunday starting at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday afternoon at 3:00 there will be a free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert, program and musicians TBA. The Heights Players production of Twelve Angry Men continues this weekend, with performances at 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Players will also present Little Red Riding Hood: a Participation Play for Children on Saturday starting at noon.
On Saturday afternoon starting at 2:00 the Brooklyn Historical Society, as part of its “Crossing Borders, Bridging Generations” series of events, will present its third annual “What Are You? A Discussion About Mixed Heritage”. This is described as “[a] candid discussion about race, ethnicity, how we express our multicultural identities and how others perceive us.” Admission is free, but you must get a ticket here. On Sunday, starting at 2:00 p.m., BHS is partnering with Green-Wood Cemetery to present a treat for tubesteak enthusiasts, “Brooklyn Backstory: Hot Diggity Dogs!” This is a “tasting tour and trolley ride led by Brooklyn food writer Sarah Zorn”; it will be “bookended by mini-tours at BHS and Green-Wood.” The fee, which includes hot dogs, is $50; $45 for BHS or Green-Wood members. Looking ahead, on Wednesday, November 13 BHS will host a “Book Talk” featuring Lucia Trimbur, author of Come Out Swinging: The Changing World of Boxing in Gleason’s Gym.
