Yassky Catches Deadbeat Cabbies in the Actsky

Brooklyn Heights resident/NYC TLC Commish David “Oh come on, it’s just over the bridge” Yassky has struck a blow at cabbies refusing fares to the Outer Boroughs.

The NY Daily News reports that the TLC used college students to “sting” cabbies who deny passengers their right to a ride home in Brooklyn and the other boroughs.

Have cabbies refused you a ride to Brooklyn? We’ve had that problem many times, especially last year when 5 cabbies in a row refused to take a very pregnant Mrs. Fink back to the Heights. Continue Reading →

Can’t Get a Cab to Brooklyn? “Destination Discrimination” Priority for TLC

We noted last October that there may be more than the usual hassle getting a cab to go from Manhattan to Brooklyn these days. According to the Times City Room Blog, the Taxi and Limousine Commission saw a 38% increase, from the last six months of 2009 to the same period in 2010, in complaints of drivers refusing, despite the requirement that they do so, to take fares to destinations within the five boroughs. The Times story quotes TLC Commissioner David Yassky, a Brooklyn Heights resident, as being “alarmed by the trend”, and supporting, along with the Bloomberg administration, increasing the penalties on drivers who refuse fares. A representative of the drivers blames the problem on economics, saying that drivers who are forced to take long trips aren’t compensated sufficiently to cover the cost of leasing their cabs, and may end a shift without making any profit.

Choppers, MTA, Park, Albany Reform Dominate Squadron’s Community Meeting

About thirty local residents, your correspondent included, braved biting winds and a fierce flurry to get to 55 Pierrepont Street for last night’s community meeting, hosted by State Senator Daniel Squadron. On our arrival, the Senator’s Chief of Staff, John Raskin, treated us to Oreos and milk as tokens of regret for Sen. Squadron’s unavoidable delay. The Senator arrived promptly at the revised starting time of 7:00 p.m., and began by stating why he was having this meeting with constituents, as well as others in different neighborhoods in his district. He summed it up with, “I really believe in representative democracy.” He said he wanted to discuss both issues of specific concern to this community and concerns about state government as a whole, and began by inviting questions about community problems. Yassky’s Missionsky: Taxis Will Serve Entire City

Brooklyn Heights resident and newly appointed Taxi and Limousine  chairman David Yassky is vowing to make hailing a yellow cab outside of Manhattan easier:

NY Times: Presumably, he also takes cabs — although a recent study suggested that very few taxis pick up passengers in Brooklyn Heights, Mr. Yassky’s home. In fact, Mr. Yassky said at his confirmation hearing that part of his charge was to “ensure the industry serves all parts of the city effectively.”

“Having represented for eight years a district in Brooklyn, I know many residents in the city, particularly outside the core business district of Manhattan and nearby neighborhoods, feel yellow cab service is concentrated there,” Mr. Yassky said. He added, “In fact, it is.”

Yassky Named Taxi Czarsky

It’s official – our former man in the NYC Council/Brooklyn Heights resident David Yassky has been named head of the Taxi and Limousine Commission. Congrats!

Now can you look into the knuckle head who drove our cab Wednesday night around 11pm and who didn’t know where the Brooklyn Bridge or the FDR were located much less Brooklyn Heights.  It was a laugh riot of a ride, especially when he pulled out the GPS and asked me to enter in my address. Really. Call us for the medallion number.

Five Questions for Steve Levin

levinEarlier this month, Steve Levin began work as the new City Council member for the 33rd District. BHB caught up with Levin to see how he was enjoying his new gig.

How was your first week?
It’s been great. My days have been busy with various constituent groups. We’re facing a lot of progress on a number of issues.

How’s the office? Have you decorated yet?
Just for this month we’re in the former council member Yassky’s office on Court Street, so were keeping the decorations to a minimum.

What’s the first thing you want to get done?
There are a lot of issues rapidly approaching, but what’s important is addressing community issues. We’re working on the traffic issue in Brooklyn Heights. One issue is I see cars circling looking for parking, so we’re working on a residential parking permit program. Continue Reading →
