Reaction to Brooklyn Heights’ Night of Hate

The Brooklyn Eagle has an extensive report on neighborhood reaction to last night's anti-Semitic vandalism spree:

Rabbi Serge Lippe of the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue said that five or six years ago, his synagogue was hit by a graffiti “tagger” who included “one or two swastikas” in addition to the graffiti. The difference, he said, is that now the graffiti was specifically anti-Semitic. He added that the homes seem to have been tagged at random – the Columbia Place house is owned by local realtor Kevin Carberry, who is Irish-American.

Carberry himself told the Eagle that he was “completely blown away” and shocked by the incident. He added that on the building next door, which is owned by Long Island College Hospital, the vandals had drawn a swastika with the words “Kill the Jews.”

Rabbi Simcha Weinstein, assistant rabbi at B’nai Avraham, said the incident had not been preceded by any phone calls or other threats. “I grew up in England, where you often hear about desecration of Jewish cemeteries and anti-Semitism,” he recalled. “One of the reason I came to the United States was because of the image of freedom and tolerance.” For this reason, he said, he found the synagogue defacement extremely disconcerting. Movie Shoots? Feh!

“T” writes BHB regarding the Burn After Reading shoot:

Just checking in to inquire if anybody knows anything about the current movie shoot–a stretch of Hicks between Clark and Pierrepont has been blocked off for two weeks, and starting tomorrow, something like seven blocks will be closed.  Help!  I’ll call Yassky’s office to complain, but I thought that there might be something on the blog.

Considering the star George Clooney seems to be rebounding from his recent motorcycle wipeout rapidly, it seems that we can look forward to some more movie making in the nabe soon.

Do movie shoots annoy you like they seem to peeve “T”?

Hate Comes to Brooklyn Heights

In the shadow of yesterday's speech at Columbia University by Iranian President/Holocaust denier Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, hate also made an appearance in Brooklyn Heights. Swastikas and anti-Semitic phrases were spray painted on synagogues and buildings across the neighborhood:

WABC-TV: Swastikas Found…: Police say the swastikas were found on the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue at 131 Remsen Street and the Chabad of Brooklyn Heights at 117 Remsen Street. The scrawlings were discovered just after 9 p.m. last night.

Also, the foyer of a four-story apartment building at 45 Columbia Place, about a half mile away, was defaced with a four-foot swastika under which was scrawled the message, "Kill Jews."

While two other buildings and two cars were spray-painted on the two blocks.

A large number of police descended on the area and searched for evidence. No arrests were immediately made.

Kevin Carberry, a real estate agent who found a swastika on his building on Columbia Place, said the vandalism didn't make sense.

"It's irrational and it's sad, but I don't think it has anything to do with me. I'm Irish. I've lived here all my life and I've never seen anything like this," he said.

The New York Daily News reports that some residents believe the vandalism was the work of misguided youths:

Kevin Carberry, a sixtysomething real estate agent who found a swastika on his building on Columbia Place, said the vandalism didn't make sense.

"It's irrational and it's sad, but I don't think it has anything to do with me. I'm Irish. I've lived here all my life and I've never seen anything like this," he said.

Carberry and other victims suspected the vandals were teens out to cause trouble rather than true hatemongers.

"As for my place, I think I was just next in line," he said.

The Library Is Not So Quiet Anymore

shelving_in_silhouette.jpg

Today's Daily News has a story about libraries morphing into community centers and becoming more noisy as a result.  Gone are the days of a septuagenarian maiden hushing chatty schoolchildren:

At the Brooklyn Heights branch, a reference librarian talked loudly on the phone to a customer. Occasionally, the loudspeaker announcing library events and groups interrupted the pages turning.

What do you think? More importantly, when was the last time you visited the library? After all, the "internet" has been invented…

TONY Cooks Oven

Time Out NY has reviewed Oven and it ain’t pretty:

Time Out NY: Oven: To our surprise, the meal started out quite well. We enjoyed an appetizer of veal meatballs, baked in a sweet tomato sauce and dusted with fine Parmesan cheese. A refreshing summer salad—arugula and razor-thin shavings of Parmesan with a lemony olive-oil dressing—was delicious. But Oven’s raison d’être—pizza—doesn’t reach the same heights. Pie purists will shudder at the spongy, uncharred crust and toppings just a half step above the California Pizza Kitchen ilk (chicken curry, for one). A comically expensive $30 kobe steak pizza came topped with chunks of overcooked beef on a crème fraîche base striped with balsamic vinegar and truffle oil—an ineffective jumble of lavish fixings. (Seems management has come to its senses since our last visit—the pie is now a $20 special.)

TONY also called Henry Street restaurant row “down and out”. Is this review too brutal and negative or spot on?

NoHe Food Scene in B’Paper

Heights Lowdown writer Juliana Bunim rounds up the Fall offerings simmering this season in the red hot North Heights food district:

Brooklyn Paper: Food Delights…:  Jack the Horse Tavern on Hicks and Cranberry streets will axe its cool summer soups, red snapper and Mediterranean salads in favor of toasty warm soups like apple butternut squash.

“You have to be more creative in the fall with root vegetables,” said chef-owner Tim Oltmams.

Oltmams said he gets daily requests for the braised short ribs, a favorite from last winter that will be making a comeback this Wednesday, along with roasted Brussel sprouts.

But the summer stock isn’t completely gone. Oltmams said he plans on using heirloom tomatoes and corn until the freeze hits his New England supplier.

Also covered in the piece are Oven and Le Petit Marche.

Best Street Open Thread

Cranberry Street has its own festival and is home to the Moonstruck house. Bob Dylan mentioned Montague Street in a song, Truman Capote lived on Willow, Miller on Pierrepont and Mailer's still holding court on Columbia Heights.

What's the best street in Brooklyn Heights?
