Hunt for Haters Continues

On Sunday Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livini visited Brooklyn Heights to address the last week's hate driven vandalism spree:

Jerusalem Post: Livini Responds..: "When anti-Semitism raises its ugly head, we need a quick and strong answer," said Livni, standing outside the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue. "This is the right message to those who try to exploit tolerance and values."

Livni was joined by New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who said the city was one of the most tolerant in the country. "One thing we won't tolerate is this type of vengeful behavior," said Kelly. A 20-detective task force was assigned to investigate the incident.

The 23 different markings were believed to be the work of one individual. "So far all leads are negative," said Kelly. Rabbis and members of the community expressed their gratitude to the police, who have been a constant presence in the neighborhood since the incident last week.

"They have been better than superlative," said Brooklyn Heights Synagogue Rabbi Serge Lippe.

Several Jewish organizations announced last week that they have posted a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) behind these crimes.

Marty to Rock Stars: No Booze for You!

State Senator Martin Connor's district not only covers Brooklyn Heights but Chinatown as well.  Ruling over his turf with an iron fist in a quest to keep that ethnic enclave from being overrun with new bars, Marty and others have pulled the rug out from rocker David Bowie and Sting's new Kenmare Street nightspot Forty Deuce by leading the charge to deny them a liquor license.  On Thursday night, CB2 agreed and voted to rescind its prior approval to grant a license. The venue was planned to be a branch of the "retro burlesque" club chain owned by the stars and partner Ivan Kane.

The Legendary Shangri-La, Mary Weiss, at Atlantic Antic Sunday!

antic1.jpgBesides wearing out many Beatles 45s back in the day, a certain diaper wearing future blog publisher was known for his manic obsession with the 60s girl group The Shangri-Las. This Sunday as part of the annual Atlantic Antic street festival, our pals at Magnetic Field present one of the original Shangri-Las, Mary Weiss, in concert. Weiss' new album, Dangerous Game is out now on Norton Records. The outdoor show (on a big stage right outside the bar at 97 Atlantic Avenue) goes from 11AM – 6PM and also features the Swingin' Neckbreakers, The Black Hollies, Mighty Fine (another Fink fave featuring Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers co-hort Steve Meyers) and Eli "Paperboy" Reed and the True Loves.

Inside Magnetic Field at 6PM, Gabby Glaser (Luscious Jackson)  hits the stage. The Nouvellas with ex-members of the Dansettes are also on the bill.

And now some lovely videos from some of the bands playing on Sunday: Continue Reading →

Coen Brothers to Invade Middagh Tuesday

IMG.jpgResidents around Middagh Street were informed via flyer tonight that the Coen Brothers will be filming a crash scene for Burn After Reading on their street this Tuesday (10/2).  The set-up will be that of a “t-bone crash” and the circular tells us that “actors” (perhaps Pitt and Clooney?) will be present at filming. Residents are advised that both sides of Middagh Street between Hicks and Willow as well as the west side of Hicks between Orange and Poplar will be taken up by production vehicles.

Residents are urged to call the Mayor’s Department of Film and Television at 212-489-6710 with any questions.
