At one time he was on top of the show business world – a hit TV show, a must-have Christmas toy, an ice show and more. Last night, Elmo hit rock bottom as evidenced by this photo we snapped on Cranberry Street.

Blue Skies and Green Thumbs
BHB came across this today about Green Bridge Window Boxes from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden — better late than never as the saying goes. Check out the offer for reasonable window boxes! Note – post-mark deadline is tomorrow!
Speaking of window box pride — are any of our blocks participating in the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest? Anyone want to? Deadline for entries is June 1st.
Happy Horticulturing!

Greenmarket Thursday
Spring has sprung at the Brooklyn Borough Hall Greenmarket now open on Thursdays in addition to Tuesdays and Saturdays. Thought the calendar says it’s spring, the nice folks at Phillips Farms let us know not to expect asparagus and other typically seasonal vegetables until later this month or early May due to the weather. This reporter went home with lovely apples, leeks and carrots.
Great Buys at DUMBO Flea
Brownstoner’s Brooklyn Flea continues in DUMBO this weekend. Highlights include the unique but classic jewelery designs of Maya Coppola (pictured). The multi-talented artist is also busy recording a new album.

Rock n Roll Circus Ain’t Noise Pollution
The Finks have just returned from what was a surprisingly well organized and enjoyable evening at Saturday night’s Diesel Rock n Roll Circus on Pier 3. Joining 17 host cities including Tokyo, Milan, London and Paris, Brooklyn Heights hosted the finale of the jean company’s world wide day of concerts celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The crowd and its artists reflected a sophisticated, multiculti talented group befitting of its Brooklyn Heights location. In addition to some of the brightest musical talents of our times ranging from Scotland’s Franz Ferdinand to Britain/Sri Lanka’s M.I.A. (who despite no official announcement is very pregnant) – those in attendance were also entertained by acrobats, contortionists and fire eaters while filling up on free circus food and adult beverages.
Even the tent itself made a creative and enthralling statement with different projections changing its outside appearance minute to minute. We only hope this is just the beginning of Brooklyn Heights being seen as a location for more cultural events such as tonight’s show.
Other notable highlights – Mrs. Fink spotted her two favorite TV stars: Gossip Girl’s Chance Crawford and Without a Trace‘s Enrique Murciano. Homer was jazzed to see Brooklyn Beep Marty “Faux Petit Fleur” Markowitz present a Proclamation to Diesel’s founders welcoming them to Brooklyn Heights.
And finally, kudos to the FDNY and NYPD for their outstanding effort in insuring that the event stayed safe and fun. Once again they’ve proved they are not only New York’s Finest and Bravest but the World’s as well.
Rat Finds Parking in Brooklyn Heights
First the good news – this rat found a parking space on Willow Street this morning. Now the bad news – it was a street cleaning day and he was parked illegally. And paid the price.

OMG BH Gossip Girls!
My curious friends,
You better be prepared to move your sweet rides before the reappearance of S and B ruins your day. Catch the click filming on Clinton and Schermerhorn Streets. Won’t it be nice to see Dan Humphries in his home borough! Do you think we’ll see Chuck Bass back from his fabulous and perhaps scandalous European vacation?
Bye bye Borough Babies!

NY Mag on Mailer
Brooklyn Heights' resident/King of All Literati, Norman Mailer, is featured in this week's New York Magazine:
New York Magazine: The Rise of Mailerism…: In a six-decade career, Norman Mailer has written thirteen novels, nineteen works of nonfiction, two poetry collections, and one play. He’s directed four movies. He ran for mayor of New York, and in the living room of his Brooklyn Heights home, he built, in three weeks, with two friends, a vast Lego city, incorporating some 15,000 pieces, known as the city of the future, seeming to take as much pride in it as in any of his other creations. But even at 84, he has a vast ambition. And now he has created something like a religion. In a new book, On God, a dialogue with one of his literary executors, Michael Lennon, he lays out his highly personal vision of what the universe’s higher truths might look like, if we were in a position to know them. But his theology is not theoretical to him. After eight decades, it is what he believes to be true. He expects no adherents, and does not profess to be a prophet, but he has worked to forge his beliefs into a coherent catechism. (Full article)
Mascots Beware
Over the last few weeks, BHB has noticed an odd and ominous trend — restaurant mascots are being brutalized.
Sure, some of you reading this may have roughed up a Bob’s Big Boy statue during your college days, but he probably deserved it. However, the mighty mascots of the Heights are just innocent standees trying to make a living getting you to sample some tasty vittles.
Case in point: The Taze mascot guy on Montague. He’s been roughed up a little and half his face was gone last week.
Case in point: The senseless de-earing of the Blue Pig on Henry Street.
No word yet on whether or not the Connecticut Muffin Ice Cream Cone has hired a bodyguard.

Easy Eats at Busy Chef
The idea of The Busy Chef, at 60 Henry Street, is one to be applauded. Regardless of one’s culinary prowess, real life often gets in the way of a homemade meal. The Busy Chef would like us to buy our entrees and desserts there – especially given that they stress that all their baked goods are made on premises. Like we said, the IDEA is one to be applauded. They sell pre-cooked food. Great IDEA.
The initial quagmire is a lack of heating directions. Admittedly basic, but it’s something that should be included with each entree.
In their absence, BHB put its state-of-the-art microwave in “reheat sensor,” thinking that the most logical option.
The first course for BHB included, vegetable lasagna, smoked chicken quesadilla and mini spinach quiches. The veggie lasagna brought mixed reviews from our crowd, some thought it not lasagna at all, some thought with more cooking time, it would have been fine. The chicken quesadilla offended no one, but the spinach quiche tasted too sweet as opposed to savory.
The entrees we opted for were grilled tuna steak with wasabi mayonaise and rice and an order of pulled pork. The rice was applauded by all, but the tuna steak, while presumably delicious upon its initial cooking, reheated dryly. The pulled pork received adequate reviews, but the meat in the entree was sparse and the sauce was a tad too sweet.
No complaints? The chocolate cake, their lattes, the free doggie biscuits in front of the store front and again, the IDEA. We are hopeful the execution will catch up.
