As reported by amNY, under questioning from City Council Member Lincoln Restler a representative of the City’s Department of Transportation said no major capital reconstruction work on the triple catilevered section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, which lies below Brooklyn Heights between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street, is likely to begin before 2028 “at the earliest.” This follows the Federal Highway Administration’s rejection of the DOT’s application for a grant to fund the reconstruction. The DOT has sufficient funds, $174 million, to continue “the minor, ‘spot’ repair work in the interim to shore up the cantilever’s integrity, and for environmental reviews.” In connection with this, we’ve received notice from the DOT that one lane closures of the Queens bound BQE, along with closure of the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp, from midnight until 5:00 AM, will continue until May 30, with exceptions for Friday, May 24 and Monday, May 27 because of Memorial Day weekend.
