The arcade is under the management of the St. George, aka the Drizzins, and is not under the managements of the EHS, which is merely a tenant in the Drizzin-owned buildings. If you want to really know about the Arcade, you should be aware there is a skylight over the subway booth which was covered during WW2 and has remained sealed over ever since. The original arcade was 16 feet in height, and the decaying metal slat ceiling was installed early in the 1960s. It has been decaying ever since.

There’s a furniture restoration company on the north side of Atlantic between, I think, Hicks and Henry. I don’t know what their reputation is.

I went to the “Plant-O-Rama” at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Tuesday, and among many nurseries and booths selling planters, I saw the offerings of Curb Allure, which sells tree guards. They are approved by Trees NY and meet all specifications of NYC Parks. They have many different designs, connections rather than welding, replaceable parts, locking screws, and such useful urban accessories as “urine shields” and “adjustable feet”. See their offerings here:

The skylight was unsealed briefly in 1981. A woman defenestrated herself from an upper floor of the, then SRO, hotel. She fell through the skylight and landed on top of the token booth with what the NY Post described as a “sickening thud”
Also, the metal slat ceiling was installed in the mid 70’s when the arcade underwent a renovation. The old wooden doors were replaced with the current aluminum door and pictorial tiles were installed on the walls.

Can anyone else smell the smoke?
Know where it is coming from?

Let’s make a distinction between the co-op called the St.George at 111 Hicks Street, which has nothing to do with the Clark Street station, and whatever entity called the St.George Hotel that owns or manages the subway station and arcade. And who are the Drizzins? Someone can always do the NYC public records research, but you may mean the Drizin family, which owns many properties throughout Brooklyn, or perhaps Mendel Drizin, a Brooklyn-based developer. Complaining to the token booth clerks will not be effective. Reaching the actual owner is the only way to lodge a complaint.

    Hey MonroeOrange,
    Check this out:
    http://www.citibikenyc.com/system-data

So much for your theory that Citibike would not be used during the winter.

  • MonroeOrange

Im not sure what this proves, except that I WAS correct…and you seem to have a major infatuation with me.

Per your chart, the numbers are high during exceptionally warm days and not high during ACTUAL winter weather conditions.

Exceptionally warm days (non regular winter conditions)
    1/13 – 51 degrees
    1/14 – 52 degrees
    1/15 – 45 degrees

Below 5,000 rides (normal winter weather)
    1/22 – 18 degress
    1/23 – 19 degrees
    1/24 – 19 degrees

So by looking at the data, i was correct, when it is actually normal winter weather, the ridership fell below 5,000 riders (and i do believe, there are at least 2,500 idiotic people in nyc who were responsible for those rides to and from work).

Furthermore, my other points are still valid. IE. that there is no reason to have the one infront of ten clinton street, which still goes out into the pedestrian walkway, when there is a park with plenty of room across the street.

And also, what happened to actually expanding this to neighborhoods, that actually need this due to lack of transportation options? this is supposed to be an alternative travel option, but it clearly isn’t or it would be in neighborhoods, that don’t have 7 train stations….

Say hi to Judy for me!

Just read what you said 4 months ago That “no one would use the system Nov-March”

So on one of the worst weather days (in recent history) there were 2500 rides. That’s a hell of a lot more than “no one” To call brave riders ‘idiotic” only proves you are a coward.

The system will be expanded. Look for a station coming to the front of your building soon!

  • MonroeOrange

2,500 people out of 8 million…im not good at math, but i think that equates to ‘no one’…but keep trying Arch…you and Judy make a beautiful couple ;)

    “where is the fire?”

All right, you got me—I was trying to get home in time for “American Idol”.

  • Peter Loibl

Honest question: how many fires occur in this general area? I swear the firetrucks go blaring down Middagh Street at least 4 times a day. Are there really that many incidents, or is that just an easy shortcut down a 1-way street? Not pointing fingers, wondering if anyone knows (it seems to always happen exactly when my 14-month old son is just about to fall asleep) …

  • neighboronhicks

for some nabe context, i used to live on jay street near the fire house on tillary, and middagh’s firetruck sirens seem minimal by comparison

  • neighboronhicks

i’ve used plaza cleaners on henry by the cinema. always good service and they drop off and pick up.

  • MonroeOrange

Firefighters respond to more than just fires. If you slip and fall or have a heart attack, it more than likely that firefighters will respond first, hence why you hear them. so 4 times a day isn’t really that often.

The “St. George Tower” at 111 Hicks Street is the name given that apartment building, when it was carved from the hotel when created in the 1970s. The entire block square complex is the former (and parts still the current) St. George, and remains so. I did NOT mention 111 Hicks when I made my comment. I have lived in BH since the 1960s, and am quite aware of the history of the block.

  • Andrew Porter

Oh, come on! 2,500 out of 8 million? Really? You’re claiming the number of people who would use Citi Bikes is *Everyone* in NYC? You’re not only not good at math, you’re not good at spelling or capitalization, either.

  • Joe A

    Pathetic.

Monroe Orange has been so consistently wrong on the bike share program it is amazing he has the audacity to even defend his comments. Remember these gems?

    1) the bikes and chains will rust due to rain.

    2) there will be people knocked down on sidewalks by the hoards of bike riding tourists

    3) danger, danger, danger. The bikers will be mowed down like bowling pins on a Saturday night.

    4) and of course we have his prediction that no one will be using the bike share in the winter whatsoever.

MO guaranteed that the bike share program would be a complete failure. I don’t know how one could have been more wrong.

  • Heightsman

I know what you mean but keep trying. It’s gotten a lot less recently even with extra cheese…and varies by person making it.

As Andrew Porter pointed out; you are not good at math, spelling or capitalization. I will add that you are no good at science, either. as you think that cold weather can “easily give someone pneumonia” In fact cold weather has nothing to do with it, it is a bacterial infection. Your concepts are dated, that of an ignorant peasant.

Andrew…your post makes no sense…if you bothered to read the posts, Arch said, 2,500 rides, which would equate to 2,500 people (and that is being generous, as 1 person is probably probably responsible for two rides each)….so 2,500 people out of 8 million during a winter day is a horrible percentage and my theory that people wont use it in the winter hold up.

This is supposed to be an alternative transportion option, is this alt transportation not avialalbe to the 8 million people?!..think before you post aNdReeW (how’s that for capitablization and speling)

  • MonroeOrange

i was making point, that people who ride in the winter are idiots, per Arch’s response.

  • MonroeOrange

This from the person who threatened to throw garbage at the doorman and the maintenance workers of a building…..

Furthermore, my assumption of poor ridership on winter days held up.

    Enjoy your day.
