From Grace Church: Help Sought for Sandy Victim

A reader sends us this info:

Grace Church is helping to defray costs of a local contractor who has been generously providing labor and materials to rebuild the home of a local UPS driver who has given caring, personal service along his route for years. The home was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy and requires major demolition and repair. If you would like to join this effort, please make checks payable to Grace Church, Brooklyn Heights and write Rector’s Discretionary Fund on the memo line. Include your name and address, and mail your contribution to Grace Church at 254 Hicks St., Brooklyn, NY 11201.

The Rector of Grace Church, The Rev. Stephen Muncie, will use all funds so received to defray the contractor’s costs incurred in repairing the UPS driver’s house, which is located in the Gerritsen Beach section of Brooklyn.

I would rather make a donation directly to the guy and not through Grace Church

  • A Neighbor

I am so grateful that someone picked up the ball on this.

    He is one lovely guy.

  • LISA

Which UPS driver is it? Is it Freddy? I sure hope
    not. He is terrific, though.

  • Knight

Gerry: contributions to the Rector’s Discretionary Fund at Grace Church are tax deductible whereas donations to the driver are not. Many people consider that before donating, particularly businesses.

I have gladly contributed directly to John, the UPS driver that handles the Hicks/Pierrepont route in Brooklyn Heights. John is the best. His house was totally destroyed and if anyone is deserving of the nabes help, it is John.

  • Gerry

@ Knight – I do not seek a tax deduction I seek to help a guy in need.

I have already given John a more substantial gift this year than in the past and am grateful to the North heights neighbor who sent out the notice about his distress. He is the best-cheerful, helpful and always a willing hand. But now, his plans for retirement have been postponed and he needs as much friendship and support as we can give.

John really is the best UPS driver and deserves all the help the neighborhood can give him. He is caring and very helpful!
