Neighbors Come to Rescue Victim of Robbery and Stabbing on Joralemon St. Early Tuesday Morning

The 84th Precinct is investigating a robbery and stabbing at Joralemon St. and Columbia Place that occurred Tuesday morning at about 6:33 a.m. The robber approached the 55-year-old male victim from behind and grabbed his bag containing his wallet and laptop. When the victim tried to reclaim his bag, the robber stabbed him in the upper right arm. A neighbor, who heard the victim’s screaming, looked out her window and yelled that the police were called. The neighbor and her husband then ran outside to find the victim sitting on a bench outside the River Deli and another neighbor using pieces of cloth to stop the victim’s bleeding. Several more neighbors came to help until an ambulance arrived to take the victim to the hospital.

That’s surprising, even by the standards of BBP-related news. I jog down that block most mornings around that time and it’s always peaceful. A few other runners and dog walkers out but rarely any shady-looking characters. I wonder why the perp decided to strike in broad daylight.

Why broad daylight? Opportunity. At 6:33am it’s all but deserted and exactly the right victim comes along – someone carrying a laptop bag.

should have kept moving and yelled “can’t help you, neely!”

True, and thieves usually aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer, but robbing someone under the cover of darkness would have made more sense in terms of being spotted. Hope they find the robber anyway.

A few weeks ago, I got a notification on the Citizen app of a mugging/assault at Joralemon and Furman between midnight and 1am.

This is why I would never fight a mugger. Just give ‘em what they want. Stuff can be replaced.
