What a lovely photo! Just a PSA that Sushi Lin on Clark is amazing – and you can still a get a walk-in table. Check it out.

Spotted on Clinton & Schermerhorn. The sound carries all the way to at least Montague as well, at any hour of the day and night like the poster says. Would love for it to end or find the source as well.

View from the St. George Tower, probably in the 1930s; no other info on this photo:

And, looking north from the St. George Tower, this photo from 1930 by SH Gottscho:

Perhaps this has been discussed before- can anyone tell me what this structure is in the attached photo? It’s just north of the High Street A/C entrance. Thanks in advance! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/45fa55fd497839ec7f2ec2b910c6ae52e157b0715a39abbe4cbd13a0abef2544.jpg

Not sure, but I had fun tracking it down in old photos. That thing has lost a lot of friends over the years. I don’t see it in photos prior to the construction of the High Street station. The oldest pic I could find was from around the time of the demolition of the elevated rail from November of 1941. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/963ad437584f124f5f9de62bdc852ad41fa0d4d22bcc92db1657a853425a3570.jpg

Probably a pest deterrent device not unlike the one that wreaked havoc until it was discovered at 101 Clark. There was a whole story on it….

If I understand correctly – all 4 of the photos are taken of the same location? Or are the last three pics High Street and the one with the elevated tracks in a different place? I so appreciate your enthusiasm!

  • Red Leader

But even for an older system, how much could that possibly vent? Unless its an engineering marvel I completely don’t understand?

  • JeffB

Yes. The same exact vent in all 4 pics. The elevated track pic is looking north on Fulton St. (now Cadman Plaza West – see below). If you zoom in on the 1941 pic, you can faintly see the clock tower building in Dumbo. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f55ae212ccb5afb6612a8a4dde552769e3ff8d39801bd7e7916c27cb68b8ee61.jpg

Anyone have any tips on finding an apartment in the Heights or “BoCoCa” area? I’ve tried all the websites of course, but I know there are places only getting rented through word of mouth. Ive been in BK Heights for 4 years and currently getting priced out of my place.

  • Red Leader

Amazing how much it’s changed and our relic is still standing. Can I ask where you found all the photos?

  • nomcebo manzini

What’s your “budget?” … There’s an article in today’s NYT about “affordable housing….” No surprise – it’s not what anyone looking to rent would want to read if they were getting discouraged. By chance, I read today about someone who had an illegal sublet quite a few years ago. I’m guessing that if you’re eager to stay in a nabe you already know & like, something like that is what you may be forced to contemplate.

I’m quite surprised that nobody has posted about the mugging that occurred monday morning on Joralemon Street outside of River Deli.

Apparently a local resident was mugged at knifepoint at 7am by an assailant wearing all black and a black ski mask.

The victim was stabbed in the arm.

  • Jorale-man

There’s an article about it on the homepage now.

  • Red Leader

Ah thank you! I managed to sleuth my way around the tax photo site and locate the address – 56 Fulton. I also did an image search and a similar structure in Chicago turned up. It’s possible our friend is a vent for the subway bathrooms. which would make total sense since the “bathrooms” are right below it. So interesting it was never removed. I wonder why.

Lots of real estate offices on Montague. However, I saw recent listings up $45K for a rental in BH. Astounding prices.

I’ve invented a cliché: “I couldn’t afford to live here unless I already lived here.”

  • Sweeties

I love this thread! I wondered about it, but never bothered to look it up.

  • TeddyNYC

That applies to a significant number of people living here, myself included.

I’m curious if any Brooklyn Heights old-timers remember a truly god-awful crime from the early 2000’s. It feels disgusting typing this out. It was where a man on Clark Street was busted breaking into a neighboring building, via a courtyard-facing fire escape, to install spy cameras in a teenage girl’s bedroom? I was shocked to learn of this story, and folks seem to have no recollection of it. Does anybody here remember it?

  • Jorale-man

45K per month? For an apartment rental or commercial space?

If the former, you could buy a studio or one-bedroom within a year and have it completely paid off. Or a 2-bedroom paid off within two years. Not to mention all of the benefits that come with having an investment vs. giving it to a landlord to invest.
