    Noise quiz!
    1. What's up with the motorbike races on the BQE early morning at the weekend?
    2. Anyone notice the loud "bee drone" noise coming from The Waterfront retirement home, recently?
    3. How long will we have to listen to the construction alarm going off at 2:30pm at the weekends at the St. George Tower?

  • JaneonOrange

I am more curious about the really loud ventilation sound at the north entrance to the promenade.

  • Nosey Neighbor

That’s the Cranberry St Tunnel’s ventilation fan

I noticed the house next to the Joralemon St Tunnel ventilation fan “house” is for sale. I remember reading an interview with people who live next to it and they had an agreement that the fan won’t run at night or on weekends.

  • Mark C

Are you referring to the sound coming from the top of the FOUND building? (is that still going on? it was happening over the summer for sure)

  • AEB

Has anyone tried Jules, the new pizza restaurant at 50 Henry? if so, what did you think? Thanks.

  • Cranberry Beret

I saw the "bike parade" a few weeks ago. Never-ending stream of motorcycles, 3-wheeled hot-rods, etc. Must've gone on for at least 10 min. They were weaving in & out of regular traffic (when they weren't taking up the whole BQE to themselves). They had a couple of cop escorts near the end but otherwise the wild west. Sad but believable that the police are so car-brained that they let this go on. It was a big safety hazard (on top of annoying).

  • Cranberry Beret

Yes it's the fans on top of 97 Columbia Heights. The FOUND bldg as Mark mentions below. (Not talking about the Cranberry tube ventilation bldg.) The city is aware, there are 311 complaints to DEP for the noise that say "The complaint is being addressed." Whatever that means.

Will there be a Yankee Fair at Plymouth Church this year?

For years now I've heard what seems to be a loud ringing phone-like sound on Pineapple Street in the north Heights, but only after midnight. Anyone else heard it?

  • http://selfabsorbedboomer.blogspot.com/ Claude Scales

Unfortunately, no. There was one last year; they are only held once every two years. The Danish Seamen's Church, at 102 Willow (near Clark) will have its annual "Julmarked" (Christmas Market) on Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24.

The photo at the top of this blog post… has anyone noticed that the house on the right left has a full-on car elevator in it? When the car pulls in it's just barely large enough for the car. And then I guess it goes.. .down? How many cars do they have in their basement? And how do you run the car to drive it off the elevator? Can you really run a car indoors? What about the exhaust?

So I just heard some doubly distressing news.

First, the fellow who puts on the Windows Piano concert every May? He moved to 2 Grace Court! After 30 years in his (apparently rental) apartment, a developer bought the entire building to, I suppose, renovate it into a $15M "mansion".

Second, what does this mean for the Windows Concert??? That concert was one of the most utterly charming little details about living here. As big and impersonal as NYC can be, it was a great reminder that we live in a true neighborhood. Here's hoping he can find someone with a piano-equipped, street-facing parlor on a not too busy street to hold next year's concert. Any volunteers?

  • Nosey Neighbor

If you’re wondering why the cops let this go on, i’ve got news for you—some of the riders are cops.

  • Nosey Neighbor

There are lots of buildings with car elevators in the neighborhood. The answers to your questions are found in the promotional materials for the buildings or the companies that make the elevators. One is North American Elevator

  • karateca2000

Thanks, my wife loves going to that one and we missed it for the past couple of years.

Of course, if it was an EV that wouldn't be a problem, but I suspect these are owned by some Russian oligarch or oil kingdom billionaire.with their gas-guzzling Mercedes or BMWs.

  • Banet

There are a few BIG buildings with car elevators. The apartment building on Montague with Fresh Start and the new 1 Clinton with the Library to name two. But "lots of buildings"? I'd be surprised if you could name 2 more. And the 2 I named are huge apartment buildings, not private homes.

  • Banet

I think it's sold. There's a good amount of renovation going on there.

Another fun tidbit from that house — they had a very inexpensive agreement to lease the garden of vent shaft building. So that building up the hill from the vent shaft building has a double-wide back yard. It was expansive and lovely when I saw it on the house tour decades ago.

30 Henry St and 325 Henry St both have automated parking systems installed by PARKPLUS Inc. These are five- and four-story condo buildings with five and eight units respectively.

Also the billionaires who own townhouses which are backed by carriage houses at 81 Pierrepont, 84 Remsen, and 88 Remsen all did a lot of excavation in the carriage houses behind their homes. I wouldn’t be surprised if they all installed car elevators, but they, of course, don’t publicize. The carriage houses are on Love Lane and Grace Court.

I’m sorry if I was curt in my last comment. I didn’t mean to insult you

  • Banet

30 Henry is a good example. 325 is not in the Heights. Both those buildings plus the two I mentioned are very new – which leads me to believe these elevators are likely not found in older buildings and therefore there will be very few in the neighborhood.

Of the 15 carriage houses on Grace Court Alley, 13 have some sort of parking space. One of them has the lift I mentioned earlier. It’s in a very small garage where a tiny convertible is lifted so a modestly sized station wagon can fit underneath. When that lower car does it’s going to be hard to find anything that fits in its place as it’s fairly narrow by today’s standards. (This includes the two carriage houses behind 84 and 88 Remsen).

There are 2 tiny carriage houses on Love Lane. While one does back up to 81 Pierrepont is be shocked to learn of an elevator there as no major excavation was ever done.

While we’re on the topic of carriage houses, Hunts Lane has no elevators in any of its carriage houses. And while I can’t be certain about College Place, I’ve been in (or at least seen in) almost all of those garages as well and didn’t see any there either.

Elevators cost a fortune to install, cost a fortune to maintain, and are pretty useless for a single family home. What’s the point? Are you really willing to give up space in your house for a second car? And remember, you need room to jockey the cars around – so you need to give up the footprint of 3 cars worth of space to hold 2 cars. Insane.

Lastly, not insulted. It’s all in good fun. :-)

  • clarknt67

Hopefully they will continue in the new space.

  • Cranberry Beret

Orange Street is having a block party in front of Plymouth this Saturday (Oct 19) from 3pm-7pm.

  • Cranberry Beret

According to landmarks filings via google, 81 Pierrepont did do a major excavation. But no car elevator in the Love Lane carriage house. They put in a pool instead. (I think it goes under the yard between the 2 bldgs.)

295 & 297 Hicks (picture for this week's thread) have a shared garage in a sub-cellar. 2 levels down from the street via the car elevator in 295 Hicks. There was a real estate listing recently that said it has room for 6 cars.

Anyone try the new Cafe Buono Gusto near Atlantic Ave? Or Chama Mama on Montague? If so, would love to hear about menus and service, thanks much.

  • Effective Presenter

Long ago around 1992 the original Buon Gusto, on Montague Street where Capulets had been, a manager, or owner attractive Asian woman named Wei or Way, is she still with Buon Gusto?

We had really liked this restaurant the delicious soft bread, salad, pasta, etc.

GREAT and healthy food, one summer I had lost over 20 pounds eating salmon and salad for lunch each day sans the bread basket and Dijon mustard sauce.

Maybe Peter, the Concerts From the Ledge guy who helped our neighborhood through the pandemic shut down has an idea?

Down the Shore we had thought a 3 bay garage was the cats meow today we see beach McMansions with 5 bay garages.

After Hurricane Sandy we rebuilt a 2 car garage to a 3 car garage

Imagine what this guy in Brooklyn Heights pays GEICO each month.

    You had not been curt.
