I propose that tomorrow only the streets intersecting Cranberry Street be renamed for Turkey, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, and Brussels Sprouts.

Oh, and here are some reading choices for the day:

Brussels sprouts? I say green bean casserole, made, as it should be, with Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup.

Wonderful artcle by Suzanne Spellen in Brownstoner about this history and renewal of brownstone Brooklyn:

Breaking news: Floyd, the bar with an indoor bocce court on Atlantic between Henry and Clinton, is closing. The note in the window says they lost their lease. (I’m curious what the landlord prefers to have in that space?)

  • TeddyNYC

Maybe noise complaints pushed them out? Leasing out your space to a bar can be a dicey situation with your neighbors. They’re looking for a new place that’s close to the current location.

  • Banet

It could be noise, but they’ve been there 20 years. Anyone who moved in upstairs knew there was a bar below them so they’d be pretty naive to think it would be silent. If anything, all the outdoor diners from Pips on one side and Chez Moi on the other were louder.

    C'mon everyone let's have a singalong!

Well, I’m definitely curious why the landlord decided not to renew their lease. Another reason I was thinking of is the possibility that the landlord wants to sell the building soon and thinks it would look more attractive to potential buyers if the bar was gone. Maybe we’ll get more details soon.

Car fire in front of 76 Remsen. Caused by exploding manholes under the car (likely from the rain). But then a 4th floor apartment at 76 Remsen with flames pouring out the window.

Hard to understand how a car fire starts an apartment 4 floor above but also very hard to imagine that it was a coincidence.

Reports say it is a transformer fire. Car parked there was engulfed.

  • A Neighbor

There must be 15 vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances, lining Hicks to Remsen.

I thought that was one of the few decent bars in the area. Hadn't been since before the pandemic but the vibe there used to be pretty decent, with a good selection of beers on tap. What's left now I wonder?

Ginia Bellafante, in her "Big City" column in the Times, wrote about the golf simulator store on Montague. She also mentioned the BHA and their survey about what sort of stores BH residents would like.

The article is here. I have unlocked it, so you can bypass the NYT paywall:

Oy. I thought the idea of golf was to have a day out in the sun and get some exercise . Montague St. is a dead issue .Nail salons and eyeglass stores proliferate in the Heights along with drug stores. At least we have a book store again. And what is it that draws crowds to that little bakery? The line is always too long when I've passed it on Sundays.. What are they selling that's so appealing?

  • Moni

Sad. Old people have the consolation of knowing they had it good and won't suffer what's coming. Greed continues to be good. Selfishness even better.

  • John

Maybe, check it out? If you live in the area, you can go most other days with no line at all. The pastries and baguettes are quite good.

  • AEB

What they are selling–mostly–is croissants, plain and otherwise. Though they aren't what one might call professionally made (they are inconsistently formed and baked) they are miles better than anything similar one can get in the nabe. This is a "home" business; that it, it is the opposite of a commercial enterprise. It has made Montague Street and the whole neighborhood better.

  • LP

A Floyds bartender said the landlord wants to put their own bar in the space.

Not sure where you are getting all that from?

  • Peter Scott-Thomas

My sympathies are usually with the occupants, but there are some "bad 'uns," that's for sure. Of course, I'm not in possession of facts, but there ARE elements of a marriage when a small business (often inseparable from ONE person) butts heads with a small landlord.

"You were late with the rent 3 straight months back in 2021" SHOULDN'T lead to a divorce, but I can certainly see how it might.

And "lost our lease" is – VERY OFTEN – a "re-phrasing" of "the terms we were offered makes us feel that we're working for HIM, rather than really operating our business." THAT happens 5 times a day, I'm certain, in a city as large as NY – in "good times," where a "good location" probably WILL be re-populated quickly at a marked-up price.

It seems to me the most attractive selling option would be offering month to month, allowing the new owner to choose between a long standing tenant or finding a new one.
