Today’s my birthday. And some other things happened. It’s this week’s police blotter.
Feel free to join in the party as I welcome Year 36 of my frolic-filled life. And I also wanted to give a shout-out to a few famous October 12ers – Hugh Jackman, Kirk Cameron, Susan Anton and Dick Gregory. If I can find one thing in common with any of these people, I’ll start believing in astrology. But for now, what better way to spend a birthday than at the 84th precinct.
We begin last Tuesday evening, when a 16-year-old on a southbound F train snatched an iPhone out of a straphanger’s hand, then walked over to a woman and took her Blackberry. He made a run for it when the train pulled in to the Smith St. station, but was arrested at the corner of Smith and Warren.
A similar event occurred two days later, when a man reached into a southbound Q train and grabbed a woman’s iPhone before the doors closed.
Some violent crimes this week, beginning last Saturday at around 6:45 a.m. A woman walking home from the subway was choked until she passed out on Plymouth St. and Anchorage Pl. The thug then stole her pocketbook with all of $16 in it. Police say there were cameras on the street, but were facing the wrong way and as an added bonus, also weren’t working. Meanwhile, a good Samaritan found the woman’s purse with some of the contents still inside and returned it.
Three days later on Smith St., a woman and her companion were punched and thrown to the ground by by two thugs who made off with her bag.
Then on Tuesday around 7 p.m., a student left the dorms at 100 Henry St. and walked right into the path of an armed man. He showed the student his gun and got his iPhone.
A few hours later on Bergen St., a man was approached by two perps who told him, “Give me your phone and wallet or we’ll shoot you and stab you!” The report then says, “The victim complied.” I’ll bet he did. The duo then ran toward 3rd Ave with the victim’s HTC Touch Pro and unlimited metro card.
On Thursday afternoon, a teacher at the George Westinghouse High School was clearing the main entrance and asked two girls, ages 14 and 15, to move out of the way. They responded by poking her in the eye and then punching and kicking her. The victim was taken to LICH and the girls were arrested.
Finally, a man answered an ad for an apartment on York St., and gave it the look-see with the landlord. It must’ve looked pretty spectacular, because he gave the landlord $26,600 for one month’s rent and security. Imagine his surprise then, when he showed up on moving day only to learn the landlord was actually con artist. And that’s this week’s blotter.
