Park Progress: Twenty-Fifth Report, and a Contest Winner

Your correspondent has returned from vacation, and resumed his photographic rounds.

North end, Pier 1, Tuesday, August 25, 2009. In my previous report, I proposed a contest to name the hill that has been constructed on the north end of Pier 1, which begins near the bottom of this photo, with its sinuous route traced by a road or walkway leading up to a summit near the photo’s center. One reader, “Willowtown”, proposed calling it “Regina Ridge” in honor of Regina Myer, President of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation. Another, “Rochdalian”, suggested “Whitman Hill”. (A third advocated naming it for a Whitman poem.) I’ve decided to combine the two proposals and submit that the whole structure be named “Regina Ridge”, but that its summit be called “Whitman Peak”.

Tuesday, August 25. This little tanker truck was spraying water on what may soon be a road or walkway, perhaps in preparation for paving.

Note: Until before my vacation, I’d been photographing on Fridays and posting shortly thereafter. Henceforth, I will follow a Tuesday to Tuesday photographing regime, with my “Park Progress” posts appearing at mid-week.

    John: the opening date for Piers 1 and 6 is scheduled for the end of this year. That may mean good sledding, maybe even skiing, on Regina Ridge.

    They are building the world’s biggest mud pie quarry. I understand the BHA will be hosting ladies mud wrestling in the fall. Stay tuned.

    Claude – Please write something about that little forest of trees sitting above ground for weeks (months?). Was the plan to have them sit all summer? Are they part of the Mayor’s million tree initiative? Did they arrive too early? Does it make sense for them to sit so long without being planted? Will they go into the ground during this fall’s planting season? How are they being cared for? Etc. Many thanks.

    AAR: The trees are to be transplanted this fall to the soon-to-open park areas on and adjacent to Piers 1 and 6. There was some discussion of them during the tour I took of the park worksite, but I don’t remember much of the specifics, except that they are specially selected species that should thrive in the local environment without doing damage to other local species. I’m not sure of the rationale for bringing them in and parking them temporarily where they are, but they are being cared for while they await transplanting. I’m also not sure if they are part of the Mayor’s initiative, but would guess that they probably are.
