New York Times Notes Transformation of Montague Street

In Sunday’s New York Times Metropolitan Section, Ginia Bellafante’s Big City column has the title “The Empty Storefront Crisis and the End of the American Dream”. She begins by telling the story of Sam I-Rumi, proprietor of Pet’s Emporium on Montague Street (photo, by C. Scales), who immigrated to New York in 1980 at the […]

Still, the official lighting will take place on this Wednesday evening, December 12 at 5:30. Carolers from the Grace Chorale of Brooklyn will be there to add a festive […]

Goodbye, Chip Shop, and Other Neighborhood Changes

Your correspondent was deeply saddened, on arriving for his and his wife’s (this time joined by some neighbors) usual Friday night dinner at the Chip Shop, to find at the top of the extensive beers, ales, and ciders menu a note that the place would close at the end of this weekend, having lost its […]

Travails of Eighteen Wheelers in Brooklyn Heights

Several days ago, your correspondent spotted this huge tractor-trailer rig trying unsuccessfully to turn from Montague to Hicks Street. Its way was blocked by a smaller bread delivery truck parked on the west (left) side of Hicks, close to the intersection. I didn’t stay around to see how this finally was resolved (I had to […]

Battle Brewing Over Park Bridge On Montague

It was just a matter of time. A few days ago, we shared Brooklyn Paper‘s news about the possibility of an access bridge from Montague St. to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Today, the Eagle writes about the inevitable objections raised by Montague St. residents. Montague Street to Brooklyn Bridge Park will ruin the “peace and relaxation” of the […]

My Report of Taperia’s Demise Was Greatly Exaggerated

Your correspondent walked by this afternoon, and the place was doing business. What can I say, other than I’m delighted? My regrets to the owners, though their earlier apparent closing wasn’t accompanied by the usual “we’re doing renovations; be back soon” sort of sign. Now Montague Street has one less vacant restaurant space.

Arrivederci, Armando’s, and the Lobster; Adios, Taperia

The Eagle reports that Ristorante Armando’s, a fixture, with one brief interruption, on Montague Street since 1936, has closed for good. Along with the loss of what, for many in the Heights was a favorite eating place and hangout, will come the loss of the iconic (What other word can I use to describe it?) […]
