Lena Dunham’s Memorial Day Tweet “Outrages” Michelle Malkin, Other Right Wingers

Ah! Memorial Day! A day where we reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom by BBQing, arguing over bike share programs and other first world activities. Brooklyn Heights resident (and possible short-timer) Lena Dunham tweeted a relatively flip comment today and sparked the OUTRAGE of neocon “conservative” Michelle Malkin who probably has a book or something coming out soon.

    Steel cage death match?

BTW, Malkin’s not a “neocon.” Neocons are former lefties, old enough to have hung out in the Shachtmanite or Troskyist alcoves at City College in the thirties, who became disillusioned in the fifties or sixties when the Sovs decided to back the Arabs and the Palestinians became darlings of the New Left. I’m not sure I’d call Malkin a conservative. She is one on social issues, but on economic matters she’s more a classic (i.e. 18th-19th century; think Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill) liberal. If I had to come up with a descriptor for her, it would be “right-wing populist.”

    Wackbag? Troll?

Pehaps I’m old. What’s the problem here?

The problem is Dunham made a moronic, juvenile remark, trivializing Memorial Day. She is either, unaware or insensitive to the emotional significance the day holds for the many Americans, who have lost loved ones in war. More evidence of her lack of intelligence and talent.

Oh, spare me your ginned-up, counterfeit sanctimony.

@lenadunham, nice to see that your kidneys are working. It was a question everyone was asking.

I actually visited a war memorial on Memorial Day. What did you do?

  • AJ1968

Malkin is doing great paired with Neal and Kunitz.

    What? There’s another Malkin?

  • MonroeOrange

the first comment that i actually agree with from you Arch!

  • Joe A

Yeah, that’s why we honor the day with department store sales

  • Joe A

She is part of the right wing entertainment complex. You know the Rush Limbaughs, the Ann Coulters, the Sean Hannitys. People that make tons of money throwing red meat to the lunatic right.

  • Joe A

There is no problem, just another faux outrage spasm by someone who has made a career out of them.

I dont see any “outrage” just an appropriate retort to a insensitive, sophomoric statement.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlsiLOnWCoI Arch Stanton

Yes indeed there is that aspect, for above all, we Americans worship the almighty dollar, right?. However, The day has deeper meaning to many. perhaps you don’t feel it on a personal level or you are torn between ethical common sense and defending Ms. Dunham, for whatever reason.

I don’t see this as a “right vs. Left” issue. You are acting just like “them”.

  • Joe A

Her comment wasn’t meant to be disrespectful and for Malkin to attack her in such a personal way was just cheap demagoguery worthy of disdain.

  • Joe A

No it’s not “right vs left” but it is about highly paid political entertainers whose job is never to compromise, never to find an ounce of good in one’s political opponents, to always attack, attack, attack because that is what makes them more money. It has been highly corrosive to our country whether it is from the left or the right. I do have to say however that it is not equal. There are far, far more bomb throwers on the right than there are on the left.

Honestly, you have no way of knowing what Dunham’s intention was. Perhaps she didn’t intend her comment to be disrespectful but it certainly can be interpreted that way. Thus Malkin’s retort was justified. And it is very possible Dunham did intend it to rile up some controversy, hence, get some free press. After all, she made no apology or clarification of her childish statement.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlsiLOnWCoI Arch Stanton

I agree with most of what you say. However, that makes it all the more important for people in the public eye to watch what they say. In this case, Dunham’s statement is either clueless or intentionally provoking. Either way, it doesn’t make her look good.

    Michelle Malkin is right

  • http://selfabsorbedboomer.blogspot.com/ Claude Scales

According to WQXR news this morning, Malkin has announced she won’t stand for re-election next year. Perhaps she’s decided that “being part of the right wing entertainment complex” is more fun (and remunerative) than being in Congress.

  • Joe A

Well we can agree on that. I’m no big fan of Dunham and I put her comment in the “clueless” category but if we were all to be judged so harshly on our every thoughtless flippant comment I think we would all feel that that would be unfair.

  • Joe A

Malkin? You are confusing her with Michelle Bachman. Malkin is the blogger, Bachman is the congresswoman.

Perhaps you should stick to your anti-bike share articles. :-)

  • http://selfabsorbedboomer.blogspot.com/ Claude Scales

You’re right. of course. Please allow that it’s easy to confuse the two when you’re listening to the news on your clock radio at 7:00 a.m., and still a bit groggy. As for Bike Share, I haven’t written any “anti” articles. I wrote one post about racks being moved from Remsen to Hicks, and another about “ambassadors” who were supposed to show up for the Willowtown Fair (although as it turns out, they evidently didn’t). Neither included any editorial opinion. I’m pretty much neutral on the subject.

  • Joe A

    My apologies, you are correct.
