Open Thread: Wednesday, May 23, 2012

May 23 is the 39th birthday of sensual R&B crooner Maxwell, born in Brooklyn in 1973. Best known for his top 5 single “Fortunate” in 1999, his 2001 album “Now” and 2009’s “BLACKsummers’night” both reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.The latter album also won a Grammy for Best R&B Album and single “Pretty Wings” won for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

So now, BHB comrades, on this Open Thread Wednesday, spread your pretty wings and share what’s on your mind.

The mosquitoes are HORRIBLE down by State between Willow and Columbia. They are very aggressive and attack all day long. This is because they are the Tiger Mosquito.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aedes_albopictus

Their bites are super itchy and often leave dark red spots which take a very long time to go away. It seems over the years it just gets worse and worse. I suspect it doesn’t help that there are bird baths in people’s backyards, a park with a sprinkler, blocked gutters, etc for them to breed. It just is very interesting how that area seems to really have a problem with these mosquitoes. Maybe there is some secret breeding ground that we don’t know about.

@Livingston – Yep, CBS This Morning did a feature on accents in the U.S. and featured me and Knishes on the Promenade: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7409252n&tag=showDoorFlexGridRight%3BflexGridModule

Knishes is wrapping in September, holler if you have an accent :)

I wish a frozen yogurt place would open up on montague… 16 handles is so far ! and red mango has no topping bar. I think a self serve yogurt place would do really well !

  • EHinBH

willow24 — I think Haagen-Daz on Monty has soft serve frozen yogurt (and they have toppings)…

PBL, JV – You may be interested in Barbara Gallati’s catalog published by the Brooklyn Museum called William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes, 1886-1890. The Brooklyn paintings are marvelous and even better when you know the sites. There is a small section on the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

@Crafty, can’t do it, he’s still breathin’, right? (I hope)

  • Bekah

Seriously! Is Katy Perry having a secret show or something?!

  • willow24

ehinbh totally not the same as a place I’m suggesting. if you’ve been to 16 handles you get to choose between a bunch of different flavors ( hagn-daz has two and their both nutri-sweet). and you put on your own toppings. it would just be awesome, a girl can dream :: sigh::

  • Jorale-man

I’ve noticed the vicious mosquitoes too recently. They flew up to my 8th-floor bedroom and bit me all over one night. I’m closing the window and using A/C now. I suspect it’s due to all the rain we’ve had.

drew B: “It’s don’t get your knickers in a twist”. (knickers is England’s word for panties).

Not necessarily an overreach. You can still say what you want but sign your name. When you speak face to face, we can be seen to make your comments, so why shouldn’t you sign your name?

  • Heighster

@Willow24 – I share your dream! 16 Handles would do a killer business if they opened here. I know the rent is high, but there would be a line out the door after school or on the weekends. Haagen Daaz could use some competition – not saying that their yogurt is even in the same realm.

  • willow24

heightser- how can we make this dream come true !???

  • Willowtowncop

Mr. Grouchy – check your Lexis Nexis- that law was tossed out. Unconstitutional.

  • Monty

The Haagen-Dazs also sells ice cream which is very similar to frozen yogurt except it tastes good. You should give it a try.

  • willow24

monty- haha. try 16 handles and I promise you’ll become a frozen yogurt lover.

Tony: Greene Street Dental. They’re not in Brooklyn Heights, but sometimes a good dentist is worth a quick trip on the subway (they’re in Soho). I have been terrified of needles/dentists, etc. for years and these guys are great. I dozed off during a recent root canal… that’s how gentle they are.

  • Heightster

willow24 – I emailed 26 Handles franchise division, trying to sell our case to them. Will let you know if I hear back. Anyone out there want to open up a franchise?

  • DrewB

eg: Even if I speak to you face to face, you may not know my name, and be able to look up where I live. Not to mention that annonimity allows for individuals to blow the whistle on powerful entities with out fear of reprisal.

  • Cranberry

Heightster and willow24 – I share your dream too! We used to live close to the original 16 Handles on Second Avenue and miss it terribly.

  • willow24

cranberry- I wrote the franchise an e-mail suggesting that they open a location in the heights. I heard back from an ACTUAL person… this dream could become a reality…( not quickly) but you never know !

  • willow24

heightser- JUST read your post ! maybe the two of us e-mailing them will push them ! haha. let’s keep this dream alive.. it really would do a killing here

  • bklyn20

My very reliable neighor told me that a woman was mugged (punched in the face) for her iPhone last Monday evening c. 6:00/6:30 pm.

  • bklyn20

…and this all transpired at the corner of State Street and Willow Place.

  • willow24

bklyn- thank you for the tip…, I hope the woman is okay, that’s awful.

  • BH’er

Has anyone been to Dr Ted Rothstein or Kolin-Liebman for braces? or know anyone who has? Please post any experiences, thanks!

  • bornhere

BH’er — My son’s braces were done by the inimitable “Dr. Ted” about 17 years ago. (Just typing “17 years ago” seems so hard to believe.) It was an interesting experience, and one that seemed fairly stress free for my son. It was not inexpensive, but the work was done well; Ted clearly is enthusiastic about his work.
