Hardhats On High, Brooklyn Bridge

BHB photo by C. Scales

We noted earlier that, during October, technicians would be examining the stones and mortar joints on the two towers of the Brooklyn Bridge. These two were giving part of the west tower a close look on Thursday, October 14.

Hey, unrelated, but did anyone else notice the toxic cloud from that scrap yard fire in Jersey City last night? The OEM’s twitter feed has a message about how you could smell it and a brief story on an ABC website with hardly any details says that the OEM sent out a tweet that said there was no concern about air quality, which they did not.

Thank you for writing something. It was driving my wife and I nuts last night. We almost called 911. I thought it might be the Brooklyn Bridge repairs. For those of you not around on 9/11 that is what it smelled like for weeks depending on how the wind blew in Brooklyn Heights. No way it can be good for you.

Heightsman, my exact thoughts. Same smell, bad memories.

Interesting 9/11 reference. After waking up in the middle of the night (had the windows open in the bedroom) and checking to see there wasn’t a fire (the smell was strong) I immediately thought the same thing. In fact when I was chatting w/ the cashier at TJ’s this AM she made the same reference. Obviously left a strong sensory impression for those us in the ‘hood back then.

I almost called the FD but before I did I checked Twitter and saw a thousand tweets about the smell. Twitter can be useful! Still I laid awake for hours. Didn’t make the 9/11 connection and glad I didn’t as that would have kept me up even longer.

Damn, those were very acrid, toxic odors/fumes last night! I didn’t know what the hell was going on. Does anyone know if it was harmful? People need to be held accountable when sh*t like this occurs!

I instantly had the 9/11 sense memory. I figure if it smells bad, it can’t be good, so, I promply shut all windows. I don’t have a lot of faith in OEM’s health assessments…
