Open Thread: “You Just Won $10 Million Dollars!” Would You Leave Brooklyn Heights?

Congratulations! You just beat the 1 in 1.75 billion odds of winning the Publisher’s Clearinghouse $10 million dollar sweepstakes! Your family, friends—and all of us starving writers here at the Brooklyn Heights Blog—couldn’t be happier for your wondrous luck. For the sake of this exercise, let’s pretend the feds are going to award you the entire kitty. $10M in your pocket. So now what?

* As a Brooklyn Heights resident, would you relocate? * As a wealthy individual, is there somewhere else you’d rather live? * Would you maintain your primary digs in the Heights and buy a second home elsewhere? * Take a load off and let’s fantasize, for the sake of sharing… Is Brooklyn Heights already your dream destination, or are you cashing in your booty for a new locale? Do tell…

    Only $10 million? With that paltry sum, I wouldn’t be able to keep up with some of our new celebrity neighbors and their eight figure residences. I’d feel so inadequate ;-)

    Nah, I’d stay in my current humble abode with the rest of the 99%, and donate 1/2 of the winnings to worthwhile causes.

    Ha-ha-ha. As someone who lives in southern Brooklyn (between Midwood and Sheepshead Bay, call it Homecrest), I look upon Brooklyn Heights as one of the best neighborhoods in the country. If I won $10 million, I would move there.

    If I won $10 million, I’d buy a bigger apartment in the building I already live in (St. George Tower).

    I’ve played this game with friends for years. I’d move from my 1-bedroom to a 2-bedroom with a view. But no way I’d leave.

    I’d stay in BH, but would try to get a place on with a view and deck — NOT in One BBP!

    Leave? Hell no! I would finally buy a place here and give up my renting ways.

    While a part of me would consider something swanky like Central Park West, I’d probably buy a bigger place here, with views and outdoor space. Moving within a neighborhood is so much easier the alternatives.

    I would downsize, buy a small villa in Noto, Sicily and spend half the year in BH and the other half in Sicily.

    I’d inquire about an apartment at 15 CPW with a view of Central Park and if none available I’d look into an apartment at 1 Pierrepont of 1 Montague Terrace with a view facing both east for morning sun and west for the sunset over the East River. I grew up in Manhattan and can pretty much live where I want and it just doesn’t get much better than the Heights with the one exception of 15 CPW with a park view.

    Now to figure out a way to retain my rent stabilized apartment on Hicks that currently rents for sub $1000. I don’t want to give this gem up. Sentimental about my current apartment where I have resided since 1980. Tons of fun memories here.

    Karl, you’d have to pour more than the 10 mil into fees for an apt in 15 CPW–that amount would probably get you the entry foyer between the elevator exit and your front door.

    I have a friend who bought there in the 5MM range. We are talking one bedroom. (only a few 1 bedrooms in this beautiful building) I would get lost in anything larger. The average is a mere $4500 psf. haha. Yes, $10,000,000 would get me an apartment to my liking.

    I would leave, yes. No reason to live in such a crowded neighborhood unless you’re working across the river. With ten million, I would retire to the country. I would keep my place here though. Keep it as a pied-a-terre and offer it to friends and relations in return for their eternal indebtedness.

    I would probably keep my rent stabilized apt in Brooklyn Heights and get a small apartment in Paris and another small one on the southern coast of Italy and travel back and forth. I would use the rest of the money to live on and explore, so that that I could enjoy more of the finer things in life without feeling strapped financially. It is all about quality of life.

    I’ve often daydreamed about this. Either I’d get another apt in the same building, but with more sun and better views, or somewhere in BH with a garden. But this is a perfect neighborhood: wonderful houses, friendly neighbors, great shopping and services, easily accessible to the rest of NYC, and no danger that 80 story condo towers are going to be built in the middle of our bucolic paradise!

    Although I have enjoyed living here for the past seven years we will be retiring early next year to a small town on the New England Coast. We have children and grandchildren living there and we miss them.
    My absolute favorite piece of artwork (if one can call a poster artwork) is a big picture of the Brooklyn Bridge that I purchased at the Brooklyn Museum. What does that tell you about how much I have loved living here in BH!

    No matter how much I win, would not move from BH, but a cottage by the ocean would add a cool escape for the hot summers. And I would spread some green to my family and my favorite charities.

    I’d buy a bigger place in the Heights with a view and a full time staff (doorman, live in super, porter), and a pied a terre in Dublin, Ireland.

    Would $10M buy me a 3BR/2BA, 2,000sq with a nice size balcony with a view and a garage space in the building… with enough to pay taxes and maintenance indefinitely? If so, then I’m in!

    Otherwise, I will keep playing PowerBall and hope that I can live here forever – this is my dream neighborhood, if only to have the cash to live nicely!

    I would stay, and just get a bigger, nicer place and a nicer car. I’d also buy a small apartment in Philly in the Old City or Queen Village (my second favorite place and so close) and be a bi-city person.

    That’s a tough question, actually. I’d love to stay in the Heights, but it would be tempting to buy a shiny new condo along the Bowery, which is becoming a great gentrified area… or the Meatpacking District, which is hip and active. But I would miss my Heights…

    How about if I find a nice CONDO in Brooklyn Heights (no more coop boards!) with true outdoor space and no more renovations ever… Then i’ll take whatever might be left and buy a summer cottage along the Eastern shore of Maryland.

    Glad that’s settled. Now, Ed McM. where are you?

    Already thinking above moving back to the area once the kids are grown. Maybe we’d come back sooner and get a bigger place.

    I’d stay in the nabe, but get a place with a little slice of outdoors. And I’d bankroll a great Mexican restaurant within walking distance.

    With the lottery win, I would move BACK to BH in a second! Had to sell apt and move to the CT burbs this past Aug as needed more space and better education (public) for 2 kids.

    There is a website, upstater.com, which routinely posts about houses available for a few thousand dollars. That’s where my daydreams have been spent, lately…

    Have often thought about what i’d do if i came into alot of money and i’ve never change my answer to that. i would definitely stay in Brooklyn Heights, in my apartment. Why leave this beautiful neighborhood? i would also buy a second home, probably in Columbia County.
