Damages to Film in Brooklyn Heights on Thursday

Brooklyn Heights is no stranger to the FX drama Damages which filmed much of its second season in and around Brooklyn last year.    Oscar winner William Hurt took up temporary residence on Willow Street during the filming and even caused some controversy at a local bistro.

The series is now shooting its third season, stopping recently in Ditmas Park, and will set up shop around Cranberry and Willow Streets this Thursday. That means if you’re parked around there you’ll need to get your car off the street by 10pm or risk “relocation”.

While Hurt is not expected back this season, the show has added some more star power to its cast: Campbell Scott, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, Keith Carradine and Reiko Aylesworth.

    People who own automobiles in Brooklyn Heights are under pressure from all sides. The thieves, the cops, the film crews, and the lady who runs the BHA -who I understand hates cars and thinks proper ladies and gentlemen should hire horse and carriage.

    With reference to filming in Brooklyn Heights, I’m not sure if anyone else is upset with all this filming in our neighborhood. I contacted the Mayor’s Office of Film and Broadcasting and voiced my complaint. I stated that I was a resident and business owner in the Heights and that filming in this neighborhood is excessive. It takes many parking spaces away from people who actually live here. We already have to compete with the courts, people who work on Wall Street driving in from Long Island, the Watchtower, etc. Plus we’ve lost the garage on Love Lane and parking under the Brooklyn Bridge. The worst thing is that we as a neighborhood do not see any return from this. I’ve suggested that film companies donate new trash cans, paint curbs, install planters, clean up our streets not just beautifying Montague Street (which I think is wonderful but Brooklyn Heights is not just Montague Street), and was told that the companies donate to charities etc. Since residents are the ones inconvenienced by this it would be nice to see some appreciation for our beautiful neighborhood. I’ve heard that Dumbo complained and received a moratorium on filming. Maybe that’s something we should do.

    That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. How about this: pick up the phone and call Brownstone Brothers, 7 Santini Brothers or any other heavy lifters and move to Westchester or better still New Jersey. I hear they have wide streets and plenty of parking. Honey, you live in New York City the greatest city in the world. Be glad that our neighborhood is so wonderful and beautiful that auteurs from around the globe want to capture it on film.

    I can only imagine what Lily Tomlin might try to grab! JVG, the occasional shoot is okay but this has less to do with auteurs loving the Heights than with the MOFB trying to fill its coffers at our expense.

    It wasn’t filming in Ditmas Park; it fimed in Prospect Park south, literally right in front of my mother’s home. Just trying to keep the record correct.

    I’m estimate that vast majority of heights residents don’t own cars and probably half of those that do, park in a garage. I personally enjoy seeing all the movie sets and am proud that George Clooney pees in our hair salons (http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/tag/burn-after-reading). Also note that the Coen brothers apparently gave some honorariums to some local organizations.

    Andrea has a point – and it’s not just parking. Last week, the long-suffering residents of Hunts Lane had to put up with a night-shoot on a short film, literally yards from the construction site which we’ve been living with for 18 months. I had the joy of listening to the filming until 1am and then being woken up by the lovely sound of the builder’s trash hauler emptying dumpsters outside my bedroom window at 7am. Is it too much to ask that they cross-check the permits before issuing them?

    I wouldn’t take much stock in what TB has to say, he’s just a bitter BHA governor who would like to turn large swathes of the area into parking lots.
