Park Progress: Early Bird Edition, and Tours Available (Twenty-first Report)

Since your correspondent is leaving town for a few days, here’s an early report for this week.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation has posted this sign at the Montague Street entrance to the Promenade, displaying a map of the Park as planned. The BBPDC is hosting tours of the construction site every Tuesday evening in August. Details, and an address to RSVP, are available here.

Thursday, July 23, 2009. The south end of Pier 1 remains a hive of activity. Thanks to the BBPDC website, I now know that what I’ve been calling the Grand Canyon is slated to become a salt marsh. Also, the highest elevation of the mound being created from fill on Pier 1 will be twenty feet above the pier deck.

Thursday, July 23, 2009. From statements made by officials at yesterday’s ceremony announcing construction of a ferry dock at Pier 6, it appears that, in addition to ferry service to Governors Island, this will also be a stop for New York Water Taxi’s service to various locations.

    I ask this seriously: Why are they giving tours of the construction site? They’ve been talking and debating and planning this park for a decade or more. Perhaps they should just build it, cut the ribbon, and open the park. Giving tours of the park-under-construction feels as if they’re selling something. Or looking for political and personal approbation. Or worried.

    On another not entirely unrelated matter: I notice that some of the elected officials in Jersey were arrested by Feds for taking money from developers for zoning favors. How is that any different from what Christine Quinn did with Walentas and Dock St. ?

    I’m kind of assuming that the “tours” are for architects, landscape designers, urban planners, etc. who might learn from this project.

    The tours are billed as being for the “community”. I’m told they’re now fully booked through the 18th, though as of a few hours ago the August 25th tour was still available. If there’s enough demand, they may add tours.

    I hope they learn how not to do a project like this. I predict that Ted Williams will be defrosted before this park gets finished.

    Nabeguy, if you’re so sure, why not commit not to use the park–ever–or until Ted Williams is defrosted. You and the other nay-sayers are such a predictable, constant drag. There’s work going on every day and progress is being made. Stop being so miserable and look forward to a nice walk in the park.

    Anon, this whole project has been a predictable and constant drag. After oh-so-many-years of hearing the arguments for and against this park, I’m glad that progress is on-going, but excuse me for being a tad cynical at this point. I’ll be the first to roll Ted Williams head down the bocce courts, if the park includes them.
    Where, retire the room line, it wasn’t clever the first time and now it’s like yogurt at Gristedes… way past its date.

    As a member in good standing of the Society for Respect to Frozen Ted Williams, I must register my strong objection to the turn this thread has taken.

    Take a look at the sign on the Promenade — note all the light gray spaces. Note that there’s no mention that these are all slated to be luxury housing! And yet 1BBP has to rent units to fill it slef up — not that I mind peole renting there. Let’s stop the additional housing and get behind Squadron’s PIRC plan.

    In last week’s issue, The Bklyn Hts Press, as an argument aginst the PIRC plan, points out that the areas was always going to be housing until a few electeds decided to make it a park (and then a genuine community plan was developed.)

    Well, how lame! Remember , Robert Moses was always going to put the BQE through Brooklyn Heights — so instead of re-cantilevering the damed thing, let’s just run it on through and say good-bye to our beautiful neighborhood.

    Nabeguy: Actually, I’m from Tampa, but my wife is from Lynn, Massachusetts, so when forced to root for a Phony Baseball League team, I choose either (1) the Rays, (2) the Red Sox, or (3) whoever else is playing against the loathsome Yankees.
