Hotel/Housing Design Proposals Revealed for Brooklyn Bridge Park
Last night at Borough Hall, Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation (BBPDC) representatives publicly revealed seven responses to the previously announced Request for Proposals (RFP) for a developer to build and operate a hotel and market priced residential housing on two reserved development parcels in Brooklyn Bridge Park near Pier 1. Representatives presented slide visuals to the general public, the BBP Citizens Advisory Council, and Community Board 2 Parks Committee members. Following the presentation there was a question and comments period.
The BBPDC slide presentation provides renderings of each developer’s proposal. Click to view the presentation (PDF/40mg).
The selection process now enters a month-long public comment period. What do you think about the proposals? Applause, criticism, favorite designs? The public is welcome to submit comments. And of course let’s also hear what everyone thinks through BHB comments below.
The Brooklyn Paper also has an article about last night’s meeting and development presentation.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1 Opens!
A rainy morning could not dampen the spirits of the hundreds who turned out for the Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier ribbon cutting ceremony–a day over a quarter century in the making.
Many past and current elected and appointed officials were on hand including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gov. David Paterson, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblywoman Joan Millman, Senator Daniel Squadron, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, BBPDC President Regina Myer, and many others too numerous to mention were beaming in the misty weather. Many civic leaders and local citizens who have toiled tirelessly were also there on this historic day.
The park is beautiful and in this humble correspondent’s opinion the early plans and photos don’t do it justice. Go see for yourself, and enjoy NYC’s newest parkland!

Annual Howl-o-ween Doggie Costume Parade/Contest, Sunday, Oct. 25, 1-3pm
As the weather gets crisper, your dog obsessed neighbors’ thoughts turn to the annual Howl-o-Ween Doggie Charity Costume Parade and Contest, organized by Perfect Paws and Friends of Hillside Dog Park.
This year, the event will be held on Sunday, October 25th at 1pm, beginning at the Remsen Street entrance to the Promenade.
It’s free to attend the parade, but if you want to enter your dog the cost is $25. All proceeds will be donated to nonprofit animal causes, including a portion to Friends of Hillside Dog Park, Inc., which is the nonprofit that advocates for Hillside.
To the amazement and bewilderment of tourists and locals alike, the parade will march to the north end of the Promenade then cross the street at the corner of Columbia Heights and Middagh Street where a team of local celebrity judges will review the contestants starting around 2:00pm.
Fun will be had by all, including prizes and doggie bags for contestants. If you’ve participated in the past, you know what a blast it is. If you’ve never joined, come on down and have a good time. We’ll have the usual contingent of costumed adults and kids, dolled up dogs, and drag queens.
The costumes are always imaginative and usually hysterical. It’s a fun way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon in the Heights.
Following the judging and the prizes, all contestants and their humans are welcome to burn off the stress of competition at Hillside Dog Park.
Tickets are now available at Perfect Paws at 102 Hicks Street, the corner of Pineapple Street. Tel: (718) 852-6200
You must purchase your ticket at least a day before the event to register your dog.
This Saturday’s Dog & Cat Adoption Event Postponed to May 30th
Due to a possible conflict with the Jen Aniston movie currently being filmed around Pineapple St. that may take up available parking spaces, the mobile dog/cat adoption event originally scheduled for May 16th has been postponed until May 30th.
Sorry folks, but due to another last minute issue with Animal Haven, the Height adoption event is cancelled. We’ll try this again in the future with another animal adoption shelter.
