City Council Hearing on Unnecessary Helicopter Flights Next Tuesday

Stop the Chop NY/NJ advises us that on Tuesday, April 16 starting at 10:00 AM the New York City Council will hold a hearing on proposed legislation that would ban unnecessary (tourist and charter) helicopter flights, including all such flights to or from the Downtown Heliport directly accross the East River from Brooklyn Heights, and the 34th Street (East Side) Heliport, which generates much traffic that passes above or near the Heights. There will be a 9:00 AM rally in City Hall Park before the hearing. You may testify in person at the hearing, participate by Zoom, or, if work or other commitments prevent it, submit written testimony. Full details on how to participate are on Stop the Chop’s website here.

Hopefully the City Council can find its way to stop these noisy and unnecessary helicopter flights. It would help restore a little of the peace and quiet that seems to be in such short supply these days.

Been asking visitors around the world and it seems most major metropolitan cities do no allow sightseeing helicopters in their airspace. NYC is kind of unique.

Helicopter noise in Brooklyn Heights has been a problem for a long time, previous administrations Guliani, Bloomberg had addressed the problem minimal if any result.

We doubt Ewic, Mayor Ewic Adams administration will have any success combating this problem.

We suspect the current City Council will have NO success combating the problem of noise in Brooklyn Heights from helicopters.

Years ago, with a photographer we took a ride in a helicopter from lower Manhattan over downtown Brooklyn out to the Starrett City area back over the Statue of Liberty landing in lower Manhattan by the FDR drive.

We needed a picture of the foundation/hole of One MetroTech Center (before drones) for the annual report.

We learned a ride in a helicopter is expensive, LOUD, and not relaxing.

A once in a lifetime experience.

What I really object to are the NYPD helicopters flying just above the buildings, and the ones over the Brooklyn Bridge at 5am.
