Shots Fired On Old Fulton Street; DUMBO Party Blamed

The Brooklyn Eagle reports that an automatic rifle was discharged early Sunday morning following a DUMBO party, with bullets spraying into nearby residences.

According to the NYPD, a 21-year-old man was shot one time in the arm at roughly 1:30 a.m. at the corner of Water Street and Old Fulton Street. He took private transportation to Brookdale Hospital, where he is in stable condition, police said. Police sources did not release names as the incident is still under investigation.

Witnesses said they heard as many as 12 shots, and at least six bullet holes were found in Fulton Ferry Landing and Brooklyn Heights buildings. (Fulton Ferry Landing is wedged between DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights.)

While a local resident expressed concern about what she termed “gang stuff” in the neighborhood, the manager of the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory was certain that the shooting was linked to the party and dismissed any idea that it was related to visitors to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Mr. Thompson noted that police presence was very visible in Brooklyn Bridge Park. He reported that a police car was parked near Bargemusic, the floating concert hall next to Pier 1.

While some residents assumed that the perpetrators were involved in a sports activity at the park, “It would be a mistake to blame this incident on Brooklyn Bridge Park traffic,” Thompson said.

I think you mean “spraying into nearby residences,” unless someone else got hit and the 21-year-old lives there.

  • Anon

Well, of course the manager of the icecream store doesn’t want to blame the visitors to the Park…guess where most of his sales are coming from?

  • gc

Multiple gunshots at the entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park. One of the bullets smashes into a neighbor’s bedroom. You connect the dots.

  • Willow Street Watch

At the 84th Precinct council meeting Tuesday night, the entire issue of “performance spaces” in dumbo with gatherings that “attract crews” was brought up. Apparently one of the rival gangs involved was from Canarsie! CANARSIE?? The park and the rented club spaces are now attracting well armed gangs fromFlatbush and Canarsie? It seems that one group circled the block till they saw their rivals. But the targeted group returned fire!! …Very nice.

  • fultonferryres

The police captain said that the perpetrators

had been at a music video being filmed at a space on Front Street. The party event spaces (not performance spaces) are at 155 and 160 Water Street, and were not tied to this incident.

  • fultonferryres

Sorry, but there are no dots to connect. This had NOTHING to do with the Park.

Lots of coded racism in this comments section.

  • fugazee

I’ll take pretend microaggresions over drive-by shootings, thanks very much.

  • gc

There are a million other places where gang members from Canarsie and Flatbush can get into a shootout. The fact that it occurred at the entrance to BBP seems much more than a mere coincidence.

  • Concerned

Coded racism!?! That’s insulting and wrong. It’s also potentially libelous. We have a community here that is concerned about gun and gang violence hitting us where we sleep and we can’t discuss it without you trying to say that there is “coded racism”!?! Shame on you.

  • fultonferryres

They came to Dumbo because a music video was being filmed there. Once again, the Park had NOTHING to do with this. The car was circling the area and the occupants spotted their target on Water Street near Fulton Ferry Landing.

If this incident has you upset you’re going to have a tough time of it once the marina at Pier 5 is ready. Just imagine the possibility pirates will be making their way into the harbor and the havoc that will ensue!

  • gc

Apparently not much to be upset about here. One of your neighbors has a bullet fly into their bedroom and you think it’s something to joke about. Maybe if it hits closer to home next time you’ll take it more seriously.

  • StudioBrooklyn

I’ve known many a drunken scallywag to pass an eve of shanties and rum, too brazen with a concertina, too merry with a musket. These be dangerous harbors for ye land lubbers!

  • North heights res

Coded? Barely. The racism is pretty much unabashed.

Move to East New York. Then you can talk about gun violence in your community.

  • Conservative Jerry

I highly doubt that it was an “automatic rifle.” For all intents and purposes, such weapons are banned and have been for decades. It could well have been a semi-automatic (which BTW makes basically the same sound as a manually operated firearm), but I still doubt a rifle was used, simply for the logistics of concealment. Furthermore, the Brooklyn Eagle article says at least 12 shots fired. In NYC, magazines are limited to 5 rounds, which means that this would have required at least 2 reloads/magazine swaps.
That is, if the shooter was actually a legal gun owner who obeyed gun laws. Highly doubt that.
I will actually congratulate all commenters thus far for not blaming the gun. No amount of new gun control legislation would have prevented this.

  • Concerned

Oh, I see. You’re one of those people who polarizes every issue. Go back to Gothamism.com and post some foolishness, there. No one here has time for your nonsense.

If you want to prevent incidents like this, then support more money for poorer schools, green spaces for poor neighborhoods and better safety nets and welfare programs to support neighborhoods in all parts of the city. Advocate for a police force that looks to poor nieghborhoods as an ally rather than any enemy. Walling off our neighborhood doesn’t solve any problems.

  • Concerned

I agree with this comment. This is a long term solution. What I don’t agree with is that we can’t do anything else in the mean time and shouldn’t be allowed to complain unless we’re as bad off as east New York.

  • StudioBrooklyn

I actually find these sorts of details (hashing out the nuances of automatic vs semi-automatic, magazine capacities, etc.) to be interesting.

I also think the issue of gun violence as it relates to gun control isn’t necessarily absent from people’s minds, but in this context (the blog/comments) the main concern is with the safety and tranquility of the neighborhood, so the topic of firearms restrictions (which tend to happen at a state or federal level) would be somewhat tangential here.

I, for one, think the issue of gun violence should only be addressed inclusively of conversations about gun culture, poverty, and mental health, but again, this venue is really more about discussing the ways the neighborhood is affected and its avenues for action or inaction, as the case may be.

  • Brixtony

OMG! From CANARSIE!!!!! We need bigger fences built immediately before the wrong (“scruffy, inner city”) element actually thinks they’re allowed to enter Brooklyn Heights Land without papers. Paging Trump!

  • RJG

I’m surprised you’re not livid the NYPD hasn’t made Willow Street a pilot for ShotSpotter.

  • Willow Street Watch

This is just typical behavior these days. Stop even the most legitimate discussion with the feared R word…

  • Willow Street Watch

You know, this entire PC madness started in the late 60’s/early 70’s when a bunch of Marxists on campus, like the SDS (remember those jerks?) got the idea that they could contro!l/limit thought and speech by using an ugly term. They settled on the term Racism. Heavens to Betsy, don’t call me a racist…I’ll be quiet and only think and discuss what you say I can….like we didn’t clear a continent and fight many bitter wars for the right of free speech in this country. And now were supposed to surrender all right of speech/thought because some shriveled creeps say we have to?

Hey guy, we have a really dangerous situation here, and you can FORGET about our limiting the discussion because someone like you says we have to….

  • Willow Street Watch

This is typical tactics today. Control the discussion with the feared “R” word…..

  • Willow Street Watch

Notice, folks, what MISSING in the above. Notice that “small” elements like: God And Family, sprituial, moral and ethical values are immediately filtered out of the social evaluation. The basic Marxist/humanist oriented landscape.

The FIRST consideration here should be what are the local religious and sprituial institutions are doing or should be doing in response to so.mething like this…Then there is the question of what kind of irresponsible home life resulted a horrible incident like this?

That’s the real, correct path this discussion should be taking.

  • StudioBrooklyn

You’ll be comforted to know that various local clergy are not only present but actively involved at our biweekly Communist Society meetings. If you’d like to attend they’re every Tuesday and Wednesday morning in the lobby of 1 Pierrepont Plaza. If you have any goat parts lying around we could really use a couple of femurs for the opening ritual. Or a virgin. We also need a virgin, but you know how it is these days, they’re impossible to find.

  • Willow Street Watch

Like the crops, bloods and dozens of other violent morons who have exploded under the blaz are going to obey ANY gun laws.

You know, conservatives and liberals are two wings of the same really bad bird. They are two wings of the materialist mantra which has brought us to this point. The incident at the doors of Regina’s homicide magnet and the “music” party space” and the above discussion is a perfect example that the entire pack of players in this situation, except for the victims, and the pundents ere should be placed on a barge and towed far out to sea for the public good. ONLY a resocialization which is strongly spiritually based will cure conditions like this. Contrary to what the Conservative-liberial twins try to tell you, NO political/legal/economic methodology/technology will prevent incidents like this growing worse.
