Today marks the twentieth…yes, TWENTIETH…anniversary of the Hotel St. George fire.

  • Willow Street Watch

The Helios were overhead last night, right on time 2:08 AM,…complete with a powerful searchlight down on rooftops. One was shaking my entire apartment and its safe to say the upper floors of every building anywhere near their flight path.

All of which raises a basic point; if there is a good reason for the overflights at that hour and what is it?

If there is a credible threat to this area or the city at large I would like to know….My family and home are here and if there is a serious threat and a serious hazard. Well, we “kinda” a right to know about it. A LOT of the late night overflights do not appear to NYPD.

So what’s the reason for these middle of the night searchlight overflights
a la East Germany in the 1950’s?

If there is a real threat everyone has a right to know. The pope will be here soon (to declare Agenda 21 holy writ) and the security situation is going to be very guarded. Everyone has the basic right to make decisions as to the safety of their families. How about some honest answers on this guys….

I’ve been reporting on this for the blog. The District 13 Community Education Council (CEC) is waiting for the DOE to deliver various re-zoning scenarios to them. ETA is the week of Aug 31st. In the meantime, the CEC invites the public to share their comments and concerns HERE: http://cec13.org/hot-topics/rezoning/rezoning-comments/ Comments will be sent to the CEC and the DOE’s Office of District Planning. Mark calendars for Sept 30th CEC Calendar meeting. 6pm P.S. 307 Daniel Hale Williams, 209 York Street. Re-zoning is expected to be the primary topic of discussion.

What do you want them to do??? Broadcast it with loudspeakers?????

“a la East Germany in the 1950’s (sic)” is a bit hysterical

  • Concerned

This really shouldn’t be difficult. Leave the current area of Brooklyn Heights in PS 8. DUMBO and Vinegar Hill area go to PS 307. Problem solved.
I’m sure I’ll get someone telling me that I’m a jerk for one reason or another, but this seems like total common sense based upon geography.

You’re not here to see this kiddo…you havnt seen whats going on here bjALSO have ospreys over the Heights/lower Manhattan! But to your (shallow) thrust, yes I DO feel any governent based in America should follow our basic ideals of open, visable citizen based rule.

You may not know it, most Americans sadly don’t but, the basic reason this country is different, the basic core IDEA of America of uur constitution is that THE PEOPLE ARE SOVEREIGN. Everywhere else in this world.the GOVERNMENT is sovereign. As such, dispute all the propaganda post 911, the people have the right to know.

  • DIBS

I didn’t know you were such a conspiracy theorist. I just thought you were a tyypical neighborhood crazy person

  • Willow Street Watch

What I just related was standard public school civics when I was a kid. This very, very basic constitutional law and American civics.

Haven’t you ever been told this ànywhere? Do you have ANY background in government or public administration in which you had any basic or constitutional law courses?

That aside, everything and anything the powers that be don’t want to deal with they now have an army of mindless PC enforcers label conspiracy theory.

If someone cannot speak honestly and intelligently to an issue so as to make a contribution to a conversation, they should really in my view, remain silent.

I thought you couldn’t answer what I said

    Very typical….

(I swear, I’m getting to feel were interacting with bots on here)

    “We’re” not “were”

Anyway, getting back to my basic question: has this city received one or more credible threats and what are the nature of these threats? At this point, the public has the right to know how much danger they are in. What are the reasons for the searchlight overflights every night?

  • DIBS

Credible threats are recognized by raising the “threat level.” The public is immediately informed. This has been going on for over 14 years now.

A hovering helicopter with a searchlight is more likely involved in something far less important. These are not difficult distinctions to grasp.

“Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference” – Twain

But in this case there may not be a difference

  • DIBS

    Another one^^^^^

  • Willow Street Watch

Wrong, the announced threat level, which was questionable from day one, has been shown to be often little related to actual serious danger present. And the helicopter activity is nearly constant, something you would know if you were here….there has been a series of indicators of increased activity in the last few months and especially in the last three weeks. So not unreasonably among average normal observers, which excludes certain parties, there is the question what danger I or my family might I be in.

I would be interested in some new comment sources addressing this.

  • smilingheights

no difference, simply old gits with too much time on their hands, perhaps they could go out and clean the BQE medians together, and, perhaps accomplish something…. Maybe…..

  • MonroeOrange

i couldn’t agree more…Dibs and WSW should maybe consider renting a time share together. The house will be well stocked with tin foil and spaghetti carbanara (DIBS’ favorite).

  • DIBS

When you make a feeble attempt to PWN someone, at least try to spell the words correctly.

  • MonroeOrange

    PWN someone?

  • DIBS

LOL. You are obviously too old to understand. You know you can do this thing called “google” and look it up.

Open Thread Wednesday has been completely hijacked. Just logged on to see if there is anything interesting happening in the neighborhood, and got my hopes up when I saw that there were 22 comments. Ugh.

  • DIBS

Frankly, it seems that WillowStreetWatch and her obsessiveness for whatever is her cause du jour hijacks most threads around here. I was only responding to that.

  • Remsen St Resident

Completely agree. I’m all for frank and fair discussion, but WillowStreetWatch’s posts at this point have just taken over the comments section of the site. BHB, any thought on moderating out some of the repetitive nonsense? We see the same thing over and over, and we get it already. She doesn’t like helicopters and she doesn’t like development. Let’s talk about other stuff. Like Emack’s great ice cream. Like the article on when the Bossert will repoen in Brooklyn Eagle (2021 anyone?). Like when the rest of Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park will open and what is planned for Pier 5 uplands. Like when Friend of a Farmer is going to open and how great that will be. Like what the rezoning of PS 8 will look like. There’s lots of interesting, comment-worthy stuff going on in the neighborhood, can we cease being repetitive?

The rejected panda cub at the National Zoo died.

    I agree…100%.
