Last Minute Weekend Suggestions: Brooklyn Heights and Nearby

For those in town over the Memorial Day weekend, there’s plenty of action on the local music and theater scenes. Bargemusic has a full schedule of concerts. On Friday evening, May 22, starting at 8:00, pianists Timo Andres (photo) and David Kaplan will play works by Barber, Christopher Cerrone, Ravel, and Stravinsky. On Saturday evening, May 23, at 8:00 and on Sunday afternoon, May 24, at 4:00, you can hear works by Mozart, Schubert, Bizet, and Brahms performed by Mark Peskanov on violin, Julian Schwarz on cello, Lawrence Dutton on viola, and Misha and Cipa Dichter on piano. There’s more information and buy tickets here. Saturday afternoon at 4:00 there will be a free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert, co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. Doors open at 3:45; first come, first seated.

The Heights Players continue their production of the Broadway musical classic Kiss Me Kate, with book by Bella and Sam Spawack and music by Cole Porter. Performances are Friday evening, May 22 and Saturday evening, May 23 at 8:00, and Sunday afternoon, May 24 at 2:00. The play will continue on the same schedule through the following weekend. Don’t forget the opening of Theater 2020’s THE Real MERRY HouseWIVES OF WINDSOR, Connecticut this weekend at St. Charles Borromeo Church.

On Sunday at 11:00 a.m. meet at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1 entrance near the foot of Old Fulton Street for a free guided park tour. Also on Sunday, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Smorgasburg will be on the Pier 5 uplands, near the foot of Joralemon Street. Don’t forget the Electro-Soul dance party this evening (Thursday, May 21) starting at 7:00.
