I know this is probably archived here somewhere, but I’m looking for someone to do some minor kitchen work: install a dishwasher, replace some cabinets. Any local suggestions?

Here’s a plug for City Chemist pharmacy.

After years of going to CVS and getting the auto-refill calls that my prescription was ready only to find that it was not ready and I had to wait another 45 minutes, I had enough. On a visit last week, I didn’t even get to the Drop-Off counter after having waited 20+ minutes and basically listening to the pharmacist speak very loudly and at length about the prescriptions the person in front of me was getting filled (TMI!).

I walked over to City Chemist. Everything was transferred and prescription filled within 10 minutes at City Chemist. It was the least stressful pharmacy interaction I’ve had in awhile!

Any local recommendations for annual car inspections? Thanks

  • Heights Observer

How does City Chemist do in terms of price of the prescription? Let us know.

  • miriamcb

For the prescriptions I had filled, they took our insurance (Oxford) same as CVS and so it was the same price for us. I don’t know if it’s out of plan but I’m sure you could ask – he was very friendly – neighborly even!

I had a very positive experience at Holy Land Auto Repair in Gowanus. I brought my car in for an oil change, inspection, and general “look over” to be sure everything looked like it was in working order. I went to Dino BBQ across the street as I waited and by the time I was finished eating the car was done. The best part – they found nothing wrong with the car (which, to me, is the mark of an honest car shop.) They do well on Yelp, if that matters to you.

    HOLY LAND AUTO REPAIR?!

  • David on Middagh

    LOL, AEB.

Did you notice the New York Times’ obituary correction for Car Talk’s Tom Magliozzi?

“The do-it-yourself car repair shop founded by Mr. Magliozzi and his brother, Ray, was initially called Hackers Haven, not Hackers Heaven.”

Is dumpling house a completely new establishment? or is it still “andys?”

  • ColumbiaHeightster

New Xcell in Dumbo, on Fulton street. I have an old BMW and have had to bring to them a few times over the years. Great job, reasonably priced, and I don’t THINK I’m getting ripped off.

  • Lord Montague

My family had another great time trick-or-treating in the Heights this Halloween. But I had to chuckle when we saw that the fancy Chocolate Works store on Montague was handing out standard-issue bite-sized Kit-Kats instead of something they actually sell! Anyway, the lady on Hicks that was handing out mini-bar bottles of liquor to the adults more than made up for it ;)

  • john

would love to know – anyone??

  • miriamcb

When we went to Chocolate Works – we got small packs of Jelly Bellies!

  • miriamcb

And – has anyone been – is it good?

  • redlola

is it just me or are there more homeless in BK heights? notably the one woman who has camped out on the corner by city chemist for days…

  • miriamcb

She is sometimes over by Area Kids toy store too but refuses help from the city’s homeless services.

  • willowl

i am pretty sure she is on drugs and also has a mental illness is which she is not currently on medication for. She seems harmless. I have worked with a MICA population before ( Mentally ill/chemical abusing). The next time I see her I will try to offer her the services of agency I used to intern for. It is a shame to see anyone struggling and out on the street.. especially as the weather becomes colder.

  • Daddyo

Xcel by BQE entrance is awesome for everything car-repair-related — though sometimes hard to get on the phone. Joke is the (real) name of the guy who runs in. The best ever!!!

  • miriamcb

I know homeless services was already out to evaluate and offer any services. She does seem harmless.

I don’t know what the mental health laws are in the city, but seems as long as she is not posing any threat, homeless services cannot force her to receive any aid from them.

  • Willowl

You are totally right. I guess the best our community can do is offer warm clothing, food, water etc..

  • Ann B Chapin

Glad to hear that Joke is still going strong! Up until 5 years ago (had to sell-can no longer drive) he lovingly cared for my 25 yr old + Benz. I was always spoken to directly and honestly and never felt “ripped off”. He has many “classic car” patrons! I cannot tell you the number of times that he has gone out of his way for me! Good man and good service!

  • brooklynheightsblog

JOKE is the official mechanic for the BHB mobile. He’s the best!

  • Doug Biviano

Yes two. Urban Classics at bottom of hill on Columbia Hts. or J & E Gulf Service Station in Carroll Gardens. I’ve used both for over 10 years and have had nothing but great service.

  • suzanne goss

Scott Reid has been my go-to for just these types of jobs for over 20 yrs — 347-277-9637.

  • scared

I do understand that she “seems harmless” but for our children that have to walk by her on their way to school in the morning and she is screaming and angry, it becomes a concern. Rightly or wrongly the kids are scared (especially when they are old enough to walk alone). The sad fact that she is young makes it even harder for them to understand. And yes, we have had a good long chat about her and what it means, but it doesn’t make it feel any safer for them.

I’m curious about the photo, too. It’s obviously the block between Clark and Pineapple. Where’s it from?

  • Andrew Porter

    Holy Toledo!

I still listen to the show on WNYC-FM, Saturday mornings at 10am. The cars get older but the banter and humor are still refreshing. And I’ve never even owned a car!
